Its name after [[Khlong Prawet Burirom]], a canal that flows through the northern area.
In October 2005 the plan to create the special administrative area [[Nakhon Suvarnabhumi Province|Nakhon Suvarnabhumi]] around the new [[Suvarnabhumi Airport|Bangkok airport]] became public.
