Published between 2005 and 2012, it is an updated re-imagining of Horowitz's ''Pentagram'' series, which the author had left unfinished in the 1980s after he only wrote four of the five planned books in the series.
The novels deal heavily in the occult and examples of things such as human sacrifice and blood rituals are major plot elements, such as in the first book, where Matthew Freeman is hunted by a cult who want to conduct a blood sacrifice on him to blast open a portal using a combination of nuclear physics and black magic, to unlock another dimension which is holding a group of ancient evil demons captive.<ref>{{Cite book |last=Buckley |first=Chloe |url=http://archive.org/details/twentyfirstcentu0000buck |title=Twenty-first-century children's gothic : from the wanderer to Nomadic subject |date=2018 |publisher=Edinburgh : Edinburgh University Press Ltd |isbn=978-1-4744-3017-3}}</ref><ref>{{Cite book |last=Jackson |first=Anna |url=https://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=nC4lDwAAQBAJ&oi=fnd&pg=PA16&dq=%22The+Power+of+Five%22+%22Anthony+Horowitz%22&ots=PsPp6mthZq&sig=4TmgFr_5c9xVxRaxtaOUrjcmUSs#v=onepage&q=%22The%20Power%20of%20Five%22%20%22Anthony%20Horowitz%22&f=false |title=New Directions in Children's Gothic: Debatable Lands |date=2017-03-27 |publisher=Taylor & Francis |isbn=978-1-317-44424-4 |language=en}}</ref>
