Since 2002, the Department of Homeland Security has provided '''Port Security Grants''' to ports within the United States, to build fireboats.<ref name="Peteron" /><ref name="Dhs2005-01-10" /><ref name="Columbian2014-04-22" /><ref name="Nhi2014-06-17" /><ref name="Ndv2012-10-24" /><ref name="herald-dispatch1" /><ref name="WashingtonTimes2014-09-21" /><ref name="WestportNews2014-07-29" /><ref name="NorwalkPatch" /><ref name="NorwalkCove" /> In addition to carrying firefighting equipment, these vessels are equipped to help counter nuclear fallout, chemical weapons and biological weapons.
