'''''Podosphaera''''' is a genus of obligate biotrophic fungi in the family Erysiphaceae (powdery mildews).<ref>{{Cite book |last1=Braun |first1=Uwe |title=Taxonomic manual of the Erysiphales (powdery mildews) |last2=Cook |first2=Roger T. A. |publisher=CBS-KNAW fungal biodiversity centre |year=2012 |isbn=978-90-70351-89-2 |series=CBS biodiversity series |location=Utrecht}}</ref> It can be found on all continents except Antarctica, infecting a large number of different genera.

== Description == The vast majority of species in the genus ''Podosphaera'' infect hosts of the Rosaceae.<ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Takamatsu |first1=S. |last2=Niinomi |first2=S. |last3=Harada |first3=M. |last4=Havrylenko |first4=M. |date=2010-06-18 |title=Molecular phylogenetic analyses reveal a close evolutionary relationship between Podosphaera ( Erysiphales : Erysiphaceae ) and its rosaceous hosts |journal=Persoonia - Molecular Phylogeny and Evolution of Fungi |language=en |volume=24 |issue=1 |pages=38–48 |doi=10.3767/003158510X494596 |pmid=20664759 |pmc=2890165 |issn=0031-5850}}</ref> Symptoms of an infection by ''Podosphaera'' species include mycelium on most often the upperside of leaves or on young shoots and twigs.

== Taxonomy == The genus was formally described by Kunze in 1823. The genus ''Sphaerotheca'' was absorbed into ''Podosphaera'' in 2000 by Braun and Takamatsu. The anamorph genus of ''Podosphaera'' was ''Fibroidium''. In 2012, due to the 'one fungus, one name' change to the ''Code'', species from this genus were also included in ''Podosphaera''.<ref>{{Cite journal |last=Braun |first=Uwe |year=2012 |title=The impacts of the discontinuation of dual nomenclature of pleomorphic fungi: the trivial facts, problems, and strategies |journal=IMA Fungus |language=en |volume=3 |issue=1 |pages=81–86 |doi=10.5598/imafungus.2012.03.01.08 |issn=2210-6359 |pmc=3399104 |pmid=23155502}}</ref>
