Off the eastern coast of the East Dam of the High Island Reservoir, the island is known for its hexagonal columnar jointing. The island was originally a cape connected to the mainland, but eventually broke away from the mainland due to years of erosion. The island is administered by the Sai Kung District.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://trippers.info/hongkong/saikung/0001|title = 破邊洲|website=trippers.info}}</ref><ref>亞洲電視:《香港風華》,青桐社 ISBN 962-451954-4</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.walkonhill.com/route.php?area=3&seq=12|title = 山上行‧破邊洲|website=walkonhill.com| date=8 May 2015 }}</ref>
