==Biography== [[File:Mme Nazimova and Frank Gillmore in Pierre Wolff’s Comedy “The Marionettes” at the Lyceum Theatre.jpg|thumb|Nazimova and Frank Gillmore in the Broadway production of ''The Marionettes'' (1911)]] Pierre Wolff was a Jewish writer, who wrote numerous plays, as well as some libretti for operettas. He was the nephew of journalist Albert Wolff. His dramas were characterized by bitingly ironic observation of contemporary life, and by witty dialogue.<ref name=cyc>Frank Moore Colby; Talcott Williams, editors (1918) "Wolff, Pierre", [https://books.google.com/books?id=qnANAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA671 ''The New International Encyclopædia'', Vol. 23, p. 671], Dodd, Mead and Co., New York</ref> One of his earliest plays, ''Jacques Bouchard'' (1890) which was performed at Théâtre Libre, was such a flop that even his famous uncle lambasted it, but his subsequent plays were received with enthusiasm.<ref>[https://books.google.com/books?id=qYA4AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA442 "Small Talk of the Boulevards"] (April 12, 1905) ''The Sketch'', Vol. 49, No. 637, p. 442, London</ref> He had great success with the adultery-themed comedy ''The Secret of Polichinelle'',<ref>Alfred Jarry (1903) "Les Theatres", ''Revue Blanche'', Vol. 30, p. 155 {{in lang|fr}}</ref> which played in over 80 cities including in the United States, and also with ''Le Ruisseau''.<ref name=ruisseau/> Nazimova performed in ''Les Marionnettes'' when it was produced in the United States.<ref>Barrett H.
