Rehov was born to a Jewish family<ref name="SFGate 2006">{{cite web |title=The mind of a suicide bomber / A politically incorrect film explores the bomb bearers' many motivations |website=SFGate |date=2006-10-22 |url=http://www.sfgate.com/opinion/article/The-mind-of-a-suicide-bomber-A-politically-2485436.php |access-date=2018-01-21}}</ref> from Algiers, when Algeria was still a French department. He experienced terrorism at a young age when his school was the target of a terror attack conducted by the "FLN" (Algerian National Front of Liberation). In 1961, his family became a part of ''pieds-noirs'' (French people living in Algeria) fleeing from Algeria in fear of reprisal massacres by Algerians against their non-Muslim neighbors as the Algerian War ended and Algerian independence loomed.<ref name="Chesler 2009">{{cite web |last=Chesler |first=Dr. Phyllis |title=Pierre Rehov: Lion In Exile |work=The Jewish Press |date=2009-04-22 |url=http://www.jewishpress.com/indepth/opinions/pierre-rehov-lion-in-exile/2009/04/22/ |access-date=2018-01-21}}</ref>

Rehov says he was not any sort of activist until he saw the death of Muhammad al-Durrah on television, and doubted its authenticity<ref>{{cite web|title=So You Want to Be a Hamas Terrorist?|url=https://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/129673|website=Israel National News|accessdate=21 January 2018}}</ref> – a claim later questioned in French courts to be defamatory in the case against Philippe Karsenty because, according to the Judges, "Karsenty didn't have the proof, in hands, that Palestinians actually killed the kid, when he was sued by the French TV channel France 2".<ref>{{cite web | last=Algemeiner | first=The | title=Philippe Karsenty on Al-Dura Verdict: 'A Dark Day for French Democracy and a Dark Day for the Truth' (INTERVIEW) | website=Algemeiner | date=26 Jun 2013 | url=https://www.algemeiner.com/2013/06/26/philippe-karsenty-on-al-dura-verdict-a-dark-day-for-french-democracy-and-a-dark-day-for-the-truth-interview/ | access-date=17 Apr 2025}}</ref>

In January 2008, Rehov was embedded in the 4/1 US cavalry in Baghdad and Durah, where he filmed hours of dailies, showing the situation in Iraq from the field.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Iraq: Riding the Rhino |url=http://www.johnsandford.org/iraq1.html |access-date=2025-09-08 |website=www.johnsandford.org}}</ref> Those images are part of his documentary The Path to Darkness.
