It was established in 2003 at Wright State University in Fairbon, Ohio.

== History == Pi Epsilon was founded at Wright State University in Fairbon, Ohio in October 2003.<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |title=Pi Epsilon {{!}} Environmental Sciences Ph.D. Program {{!}} College of Science & Mathematics |url=https://science-math.wright.edu/environmental-sciences-phd-program/pi-epsilon |access-date=2025-10-16 |website=Wright State University}}</ref> Its founders were doctoral students in the Environmental Sciences Program.<ref name=":0" /> The society was formed to is to promote the study of environmental sciences by recognizing scholarly and professional activity.<ref name=":0" /> It also promotes interdisciplinary studies and interactions between industry and academia.<ref name=":0" />

A second chapter was established at University of Virginia. As of 2025, the society has fifteen chapters in the United States. It is headquartered at Wright State University.<ref name=":0" />

== Membership requirements == Lifetime membership is open to undergraduate in the environmental and natural sciences who have completed thirty hours with a GPA of at least 3.30, including three environmental science classes.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" /> Graduate students are eligible if they have complete six hours with a GPA of at least 3.30.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" />
