== Life == Peter Scheiffele studied biochemistry at the Freie Universität Berlin. In 1998 he earned his doctorate from the EMBL in Heidelberg<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.embl.de/aboutus/alumni/downloads/labday_participants_14Jun16.pdf |title=EMBL Alumni |publisher=embl.de |date= |accessdate=2020-05-06}}</ref> and subsequently worked as a postdoc at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California in San Francisco. In 2001 he was appointed as an assistant professor in the Department of Physiology & Cellular Biophysics at Columbia University, New York, and conducted research in the field of neurobiology.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.samw.ch/dam/jcr:00329986-9b8f-4901-bcf7-a984cb72e162/kurzlebenslaeufe_samw_bing_preistraeger_2014.pdf |title=Curriculum Vitae Peter Scheiffele |publisher=samw.ch |date= |accessdate=2020-05-06}}</ref> Since 2008 Peter Scheiffele has been a Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel.
== Work == Scheiffele investigates the mechanisms in the formation of neuronal networks in the central nervous system. His focus is the formation of synapses. Peter Scheiffele discovered that the neuronal adhesion molecules neuroligin and neurexin play an important role in synapse formation.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://medicalxpress.com/news/2012-09-scientists-reverse-disorder-neuronal-circuits.html |title=Scientists reverse disorder of neuronal circuits in autism |publisher=medicalxpress.com |date= |accessdate=2020-05-06}}</ref> In his current work he is collaborating with a network of European researchers to investigate pathophysiology and explore treatment approaches for autism spectrum disorders.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.neurex.org/the-research-network/by-city/basel/item/81 |title=Research topics Peter Scheiffele |publisher=neurex.org |date= |accessdate=2020-05-06}}</ref>
