''P. capensis'' is found in large schools in pelagic-oceanic environments in subtropical climates.<ref name=FishBase>{{FishBase|Petalichthys|capensis|id=16849 |month=March|year=2013}}</ref> The typical length of this species is about {{cvt|30|cm}}. Body colouration is a silver and blueish colour.
