'''''Perlodes mortoni''','' the '''orange-striped stonefly''', is a species of stonefly that is found in Great Britain.<ref name="inaturalist-Perlodes mortoni">{{cite web |title=Orange-striped Stonefly (''Perlodes mortoni'') |url=https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/871474-Perlodes-mortoni |access-date=9 August 2024 |website=iNaturalist |language=en-GB}}</ref>
== Description == ''Perlodes mortoni'' shares similar characteristics with the European ''P. dispar'' and ''P. microcephalus'' species. ''P. mircrocephalus'' may have a presence in Britain but further evidence is needed for confirmation.<ref>{{Cite GBIF |taxon=Perlodes dispar |id=2003965 |access-date=2024-08-09 |language=en}}</ref><ref name=":0">{{Cite GBIF |taxon=Perlodes mortoni |id=182137659 |access-date=2024-08-09 |language=en}}</ref><ref name=":1">{{Cite tech report|institution=Natural England |title=A review of the stoneflies (Plecoptera) of Great Britain|number=NECR174 |url=https://publications.naturalengland.org.uk/publication/5404611030548480 |access-date=2024-08-09 |website=Access to Evidence |language=en-gb}}</ref>
The males are brachypterous, meaning they have very short wings that are recorded as being between 1.4 and 1.8 times as long as its head width. This could perhaps be an adaptation to high wind speed found in their habitat as flight could risk displacement from ideal conditions. Females have fully formed wings.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" />
Adults have an omnivorous diet, eating vegetable matter and preying upon aquatic invertebrates.<ref name=":1" />
It overwinters as a nymph and flight season extends from March to June, peaking in May.<ref name=":2">{{Cite web |title=''Perlodes mortoni'', Orange-striped Stonefly, identification and imitation |url=https://www.first-nature.com/insects/p-perlodes-mortoni.php |access-date=2024-08-09 |website=www.first-nature.com}}</ref>
== Range == The stonefly is widespread in rivers across Great Britain and is thought to be an endemic species.<ref>{{Cite web |title=''Perlodes mortoni'' {{!}} NBN Atlas |url=https://species.nbnatlas.org/species/NHMSYS0021168023 |access-date=2024-08-09 |website=species.nbnatlas.org}}</ref> Its conservation status was assessed by the IUCN Red List in 2021 and found to be of Least Concern.<ref name=IUCN/>
In Ireland, the species was recorded by King and Halbert in Kerry (no year given) and Louth (1910). Recent efforts to find it have been unsuccessful and as such the species is deemed Regionally Extinct in Ireland.<ref>{{Cite journal |last=Hugh Feeley, Jan-Robert Baars, Mary Kelly-Quinn, Brian Nelson |date=2020 |title=Ireland Red List (No. 13) Stoneflies (Plecoptera) |url=https://www.npws.ie/sites/default/files/publications/pdf/Ireland%20Red%20List%20No.%2013%20Stoneflies%20%28Plecoptera%29.pdf |journal=Ireland Red List |issue=13}}</ref>
== Habitat == Stonefly nymphs are found in rivers and streams, where they live between stones. They seem to prefer well oxygenated water. Adults are usually found near river banks.<ref name=":2" /><ref>{{Cite web |title=Plecoptera |url=https://www.royensoc.co.uk/understanding-insects/classification-of-insects/plecoptera/ |access-date=2024-08-09 |website=Royal Entomological Society |language=en-GB}}</ref>
== Taxonomy == ''Perlodes mortoni'' was previously synonymised with ''P. microcephalus'' by Illies in 1955 but was removed from synonymy in 2011 and found to be a distinct species.<ref>{{Cite journal |last=Zwick |first=Peter |date=2011 |title=POLYMORPHISM AND TAXONOMIC PROBLEMS IN THE PERLODES MICROCEPHALUS GROUP (PLECOPTERA: PERLODIDAE); PERLODES MORTONI REMOVED FROM SYNONYMY |url=https://www2.pms-lj.si/illiesia/papers/Illiesia07-26.pdf |journal=Illiesia |pages=291–296}}</ref>
