{{Short description|Large Hul'qumi'num-speaking First Nation}} thumb|300px|Location of traditional Penelakut tribal territory The '''Penelakut''' are a large (about 1000 individuals) Hul'qumi'num-speaking First Nation. They live primarily on Penelakut Island (formerly Kuper Island) near the south end of Vancouver Island,<ref>{{CathEncy|title=Penelakut Indians|url=http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/11635b.htm}}</ref> and Galiano Island. Their land stretches to Tent Island which is private and currently uninhabited.
The name Penelakut comes from ''penálaxeth<nowiki>'</nowiki>'', the village on the northeast end of Penelakut Island, once the largest Hul'qumi'num-speaking village in the Gulf Islands. ''Penálaxeth<nowiki>'</nowiki>'' means "log buried on the beach", which may refer to the many longhouses that were once on the beach near there.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2023-06-18 |title=Hul'qumi'num Treaty Group - Six First Nations working as one - Penelakut |url=http://www.hulquminum.bc.ca/hulquminum_people/penelakut |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171025061940/http://www.hulquminum.bc.ca/hulquminum_people/penelakut |archive-date=2017-10-25 |access-date=2023-06-18 |website=Hulquminum People }}</ref>
