==Art and activism== Pavel Pukhov fell in love with free expression when, as an 11-year-old, he stumbled upon Moscow's infamous Tsoi Wall, an alleyway in central Moscow covered in graffiti and messages commemorating the life and cult following of rock star Viktor Tsoi.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.calvertjournal.com/opinion/show/648/russian-banksy-pasha183-p183|title=Flickering flame: remembering street art pioneer Pasha 183|website=Calvertjournal.com|access-date=16 December 2017}}</ref>

Pavel 183's works range from murals spray-painted on public structures to combinations of audio and video, at times accompanied by a political message.<ref name="BBC"/> His works have been compared with those of the British street artist Banksy, and U.S. artist Keith Haring.<ref name="huffingtonpost183">{{cite web|last=Isachenkov|first=Vladimir|url=http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/03/p183-dead-street-artist-russian-banksy-dies_n_3006544.html|title=P183 Dead: Street Artist Known As 'Russian Banksy' Dies At 29|publisher=Huffington Post|date=3 April 2013|access-date=6 April 2013}}</ref>

Like Banksy, Pukhov chose to keep his true identity a secret, revealing only a few biographical details on his website, including his birth and residence in Moscow and his degree in communicative design.<ref name="Pavel"/><ref name="guardian183">{{cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2012/jan/31/moscow-banksy-p183-in-pictures|title=Moscow's Banksy: the street art of P183 – in pictures|work=The Guardian|date=31 January 2012|access-date=6 April 2013}}</ref> However, he did not like the comparison, after 14 years spent forming his own style.<ref name="autogenerated183">{{cite web|url=http://www.adme.ru/interview/pavel-p183-ya-ushelec-375805|title=Павел P183: "Я - ушелец" - Интервью|publisher=Adme.ru|date=2 April 2013|access-date=6 April 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130406142322/http://www.adme.ru/interview/pavel-p183-ya-ushelec-375805/|archive-date=6 April 2013|url-status=dead}}</ref>

He attacked advertising for its power to deprive people of free will. He described designers as money makers and contrasts them with real artists, whose work he respects most.<ref name="autogenerated183"/> He was best known for his socially critical installations and grey-scale photorealistic murals. Later in his career, Pukhov explored different techniques of creation, eventually learning to draw in the dark with lights and to incorporate existing environmental aides, such as Moscow's waterways and concrete spaces.<ref name="Calvert Journal">{{cite web|last=Zimberg|first=Alexis|url=http://calvertjournal.com/comment/show/648/russian-banksy-pasha183|title=Flickering flame: remembering street art pioneer Pasha 183|access-date=4 April 2013|date=4 February 2013|publisher=Calvert Journal}}</ref>

While his works addressed political issues, he claimed not to consider himself a "political artist".<ref name="autogenerated183"/> One of his last works addresses the issue of the 2011 Russian legislative election, the results of which many in Moscow and around Russia have disputed.<ref name="BBC"/>

==Career== Pukhov received a degree in communicative design, but never used the techniques he learned during his studies. He though had several jobs besides his nocturnal graffiti career, such as System administrator work, designer, restorer, art director, etc.<ref name="autogenerated183"/> In 2012 he garnered the attention of the international press.<ref name="guardian183"/><ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/culturepicturegalleries/9049033/The-Russian-Banksy-street-artist-P183-decorates-the-streets-of-Moscow.html|title=The Russian Banksy: street artist P183 decorates the streets of Moscow|publisher=The Telegraph|date=30 January 2012|access-date=6 April 2013}}</ref>

Between 2012 and 2013, he was commissioned by theatrical production company Teatralnoye Delo ["Theater Works"] to design the scenery for the rock musical ''Todd''; the company's spokeswoman announced Pavel Pukhov's death.<ref name="huffingtonpost183"/>

==Death== Pavel 183 died on 1 April 2013 from undisclosed causes.<ref>{{cite news|url=http://www.bostonherald.com/news_opinion/international/europe/2013/04/pasha_p183_mysterious_russian_graffiti_artist_29|title=Pasha P183, mysterious Russian graffiti artist, 29|author=Staff|date=4 April 2014|newspaper=Boston Herald|access-date=25 November 2014}}</ref> The cause of death was not released, and sources have given conflicting reports regarding the cause of death.<ref>{{cite news|url=http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/russian-banksy-pasha-p183-dies-moscow-453244|title=Mystery Death of Russian Banksy, Pasha P183, in Moscow|last=Mezzofiore|first=Gianluca|date=3 April 2013|access-date=25 November 2014|newspaper=International Business Times}}</ref> ''The Times''' Ben Hoyle wrote the Russian street art community was "in mourning."<ref name="MysteryOfRussianArtistsDeath">{{cite news|url=https://www.thetimes.com/travel/destinations/uk-travel/england/london-travel/mystery-of-russian-artists-death-jzvr65682f5|title=Mystery of Russian artist's death|last=Hoye|first=Ben|newspaper=The Times|date=3 April 2013|access-date=24 November 2014}}</ref><ref>{{cite news|url=https://www.thetimes.com/travel/destinations/uk-travel/england/london-travel/mystery-of-russian-artists-death-jzvr65682f5|title=Mystery of Russian artist's death|first=Ben|last=Hoyle|date=3 April 2013|website=The Times|access-date=16 December 2017}}</ref>
