In May 2006, ''Bangaram'', directed by Tamil filmmaker Dharani was released. It starred Kalyan in the title role and Meera Chopra, Sanusha, Ashutosh Rana, and Mukesh Rishi in supporting roles. Produced by A. M. Rathnam, who had earlier produced ''Kushi'' (2001), the story follows Bangaram, a reporter who dreams of working for the BBC. Notably, it was the first time in Kalyan's career that he did not have a female lead opposite him. The film received mixed to negative reviews, and Kalyan reportedly gave refunds to the film's distributors due to its underperformance.<ref>{{Cite web |date=3 May 2021 |title=15 years for Bangaram: For the first time in his career, Pawan Kalyan did not have a female lead starring opposite him |url=https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/videos/entertainment/regional/telugu/15-years-for-bangaram-for-the-first-time-in-his-career-pawan-kalyan-did-not-have-a-female-lead-starring-opposite-him/videoshow/82369969.cms |access-date=2024-10-15 |website=The Times of India |language=en |archive-date=3 December 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20241203200133/https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/videos/entertainment/regional/telugu/15-years-for-bangaram-for-the-first-time-in-his-career-pawan-kalyan-did-not-have-a-female-lead-starring-opposite-him/videoshow/82369969.cms |url-status=live }}</ref><ref name=":37">{{Cite web |date=2023-07-26 |title=Panjaa To Bangaram, Pawan Kalyan Films That Flopped At The Box Office |url=https://www.news18.com/movies/panjaa-to-bangaram-pawan-kalyan-films-that-flopped-at-the-box-office-8432179.html |access-date=2024-10-15 |website=News18 |language=en |archive-date=4 December 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20241204025023/https://www.news18.com/movies/panjaa-to-bangaram-pawan-kalyan-films-that-flopped-at-the-box-office-8432179.html |url-status=live }}</ref>
