Born in [[Coventry]], Connew attended [[King Henry VIII School, Coventry|King Henry VIII Grammar School]], an independent school in the city, followed by the LSE. He entered journalism working for the ''[[Coventry Express]]'', then moved to the ''[[Coventry Evening Telegraph]].''
