== Development == An initial digital designed was made public in 2015. One of the mentioned objective with this project was to ensure a domestic capacity to produce howitzers.<ref>{{Cite web |title=PUOLUSTUSVOIMIEN KESKEISET MATERIAALIHANKKEET KOTIMAISEN PUOLUSTUSTEOLLISUUDEN KANNALTA LOGISTIIKKAYHTEISTYÖ RUOTSIN, NORJAN JA VIRON KANSSA – PDF Ilmainen lataus |url=https://docplayer.fi/6228187-Puolustusvoimien-keskeiset-materiaalihankkeet-kotimaisen-puolustusteollisuuden-kannalta-logistiikkayhteistyo-ruotsin-norjan-ja-viron-kanssa.html |access-date=2023-08-18 |website=docplayer.fi}}</ref>
In 2017, Finland selected the K9 Thunder as its new self-propelled howitzer, and the project became dormant. But following the 2022 Russian invasian of Ukraine, needs to quickly modernise the indirect fire capabilities arose. Among the systems that need to be replaced are the field guns, especially the old soviet guns. The results of the Nexter CAESAR in the Ukraine war confirmed that this type of systems would be a good solution to replace the field guns, an economical and effective system, complementary to the K9 Thunder.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2024-04-18 |title=Finland will develop a budget version of a wheeled self-propelled gun |url=https://vpk.name/en/852729_finland-will-develop-a-budget-version-of-a-wheeled-self-propelled-gun.html |access-date=2025-03-21 |website=ВПК.name |language=en}}</ref>
In 2024, the development of the project by Patria advanced with the intent to make a prototype.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Redacción |date=2024-04-14 |title=Patria se prepara para reanudar la producción de cañones y desarrollar un nuevo vehículo de combate de artillería |url=https://www.zona-militar.com/2024/04/14/patria-se-prepara-para-reanudar-la-produccion-de-canones-y-desarrollar-un-nuevo-vehiculo-de-combate-de-artilleria/ |access-date=2024-12-31 |website=Zona Militar |language=es-AR}}</ref> The first prototype was unveiled in 2025 at Arctic Event 2025, and its name was unveiled, the Patria ARVE (ARtillery on VEhicle).<ref>{{Cite web |last=Valpolini |first=Paolo |date=2025-03-20 |title=Patria anticipates Finnish needs unveiling its ARVE truck-mounted 155 mm self-propelled howitzer |url=https://www.edrmagazine.eu/patria-anticipates-finnish-needs-unveiling-its-arve-truck-mounted-155-mm-self-propelled-howitzer |access-date=2025-03-21 |website=EDR Magazine |language=en-GB}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |website=Army Recognition |title=Patria completes test firings of Finland’s ARVE first wheeled 155mm self-propelled howitzer |url=https://armyrecognition.com/news/army-news/2025/patria-completes-test-firings-of-finlands-arve-first-wheeled-155mm-self-propelled-howitzer |date=27 June 2025 |access-date=5 July 2025}}</ref>
In June 2025, Patria announced having fired the system for the first time. And the performances were as expected, even with a maximum of charges.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Valpolini |first=Paolo |date=2025-06-26 |title=Patria has conducted successful test firings with the new ARVE mobile field gun |url=https://www.edrmagazine.eu/patria-has-conducted-successful-test-firings-with-the-new-arve-mobile-field-gun |access-date=2025-06-26 |website=EDR Magazine |language=en-GB}}</ref>
== Design ==
=== Prototype === The prototype takes the existing Patria 155 GH 52 APU gun, and is installed on the chassis of the SISU E13TP with an added hydraulic stabiliser installed at the rear of the vehicle. The spade is lowered before firing to transfer most of the recoil into the ground.<ref name="EDR ARVE" />
==== Gun ==== The gun barrel is equipped with a single-chamber muzzle brake.<ref name="EDR ARVE" />
==== Ammunition ==== The system can transport 24 complete ammunition.<ref name="EDR ARVE" />
==== Capabilities ==== The prototype can shoot its first round 90 seconds after stopping, and it is ready to leave 45 seconds after the last round is shot.<ref name="EDR ARVE" /> The firing rate of the system is:
* 3 rounds in the first 15 seconds * 8 rounds per minute at its maximum rate of fire * 2 rounds per minute at a sustained rate
=== Planned improvements === The prototype will enable to test the concept and if the architecture of the system is sound. Depending on the cost target and the expectations of the potential clients, the original gun design might see some changes, such as an electrical laying system.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Armored Vehicle Maker Patria Unveils ARVE Self Propelled Howitzer |url=https://www.defensemirror.com/news/39104 |access-date=2025-03-21 |website=defensemirror.com}}</ref>
