The inner petals stick up, which resembles a tulip. Looks similar to the corn rose poppy ''Papaver rhoeas'' and the Greek red poppy ''Papaver dubium''.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.plant-identification.co.uk/skye/papaveraceae/papaver-dubium.htm |title=''Papaver dubium'' |publisher=Plant-identification.co.uk |date=2006-07-04 |accessdate=2012-10-23}}</ref> The distinct characteristics is the black centre which emphasises the tulip-shaped petals surrounding it.{{citation needed|date=June 2013}}
==Growing== As for all poppies, best time to be sown is late autumn or early spring. The snow of winter helps "challenge" the poppies to grow good rooting systems, which results in a strong plant. Spacing for plants should be at the minimum of {{convert|30|cm|abbr=on}} because the roots do not grow deep, and after just a few centimetres they start growing horizontally.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.poppies.org/faq/growing/ |title=The Leading Poppy Site on the Net |publisher=poppies.org |date= |accessdate=2012-10-23}}</ref> The disadvantage of their roots is that poppies do not do well being transplanted. Caution must be taken when transplanting from peat pots. Another problem with the roots of any type of poppy is that the roots will rot if they do not have proper drainage. One should not over water, and to prevent complications one must use a spray bottle when ''Papaver'' plants are maturing.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.mightyguide.net/how-to-grow-poppies.html |title=How to Grow Poppies |publisher=Mightyguide.net |date= 15 August 2011|accessdate=2012-10-23}}</ref>
==Chemical composition== The Turkish tulip contains the alkaloids morphine, codeine and thebaine.<ref name=pmid17425099>{{cite journal |pmid=17425099 |year=2007 |last1=Salehi |first1=Peyman |last2=Sonboli |first2=Ali |last3=Zavareh |first3=Alireza Fakhari |last4=Sefidkon |first4=Fatemeh |last5=Dayeni |first5=Manijeh |last6=Cheraghi |first6=Bahram |title=Narcotic Alkaloids of Four ''Papaver'' Species from Iran |volume=62 |issue=1–2 |pages=16–8 |journal=Zeitschrift für Naturforschung C|doi=10.1515/znc-2007-1-203 |s2cid=24008266 |doi-access=free }}</ref> Nevertheless, its blossom and foliage are only used for ornamental purposes; the alkaloidal content of the narcotics stated are relatively low, thus uneconomic to extract opiates.<ref>{{GRIN | accessdate=2012-10-23}}</ref>
