'''Palian''' ({{langx|th|ปะเหลียน}}, {{IPA|th|pā.lǐa̯n|pron}}) is a district (''amphoe'') in the southern part of Trang province, Thailand.
==Geography== Neighboring districts are (from the east clockwise) Kong Ra, Tamot, and Pa Bon of Phatthalung province, Khuan Kalong, Manang, and Thung Wa of Satun province, Hat Samran and Yan Ta Khao of Trang Province. <!--according to some maps the southern part of the district was changed to be part of Thung Wa, which then would be the only district of Satun to border Palian.-->
==History== Originally named ''Yong Sata'' (หยงสตา) or ''Tan Yong Sata'' (ตันหยงสตา; Kelantan-Pattani Malay means 'Mango Plum Cape'),<ref name="Čhaisamut1996">{{cite book|last=Čhaisamut|first=Yư̄nyat|title=ตรัง: เมืองท่าโบราณสองพันปี นายกรัฐมนตรีสองยุค [Trang: Two thousand year old port city]|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=RehwAAAAMAAJ|accessdate=7 August 2021|year=1996|publisher=สํานักพิมพ์มติชน|language=Thai|isbn=978-974-7115-60-4|page=157}}</ref> it was renamed ''Palian'' in 1939.<ref>{{cite journal|journal=Royal Gazette|volume=56|issue=ก|pages=354–364|script-title=th:พระราชกฤษฎีกาเปลี่ยนนามอำเภอ กิ่งอำเภอ และตำบลบางแห่ง พุทธศักราช ๒๔๘๒|url=http://www.ratchakitcha.soc.go.th/DATA/PDF/2482/A/354.PDF|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090219071714/http://www.ratchakitcha.soc.go.th/DATA/PDF/2482/A/354.PDF|url-status=dead|archive-date=February 19, 2009|date=April 17, 1939|language=Thai}}</ref>
Palian is believed to have been a seaport since ancient times, some 1,800 years ago, paired with ''Takola'' (now's Mueang Trang). When an ancient Greek merchant named Alexander sailed through here in 150, and told the story of his journey to Ptolemy. At that time, Palian was called ''Palanda''.<ref>{{cite web|trans-title=Archives of Ptolemy and United Kingdom of Khiri Rat|title=จดหมายเหตุปโตเลมีกับสหราชอาณาจักรคีรีรัฐ|language=thai|url=http://www.usakanae.com/index.php?lay=show&ac=article&Id=539664501|first=Rueangyot|last=Chantarakiri|accessdate=2020-03-02|work=Usakanae.com|date=2010-10-14|archive-date=2020-02-07|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200207070916/http://www.usakanae.com/index.php?lay=show&ac=article&Id=539664501|url-status=dead}}</ref>
==Administration== The district is divided into 10 sub-districts (''tambons''), which are further subdivided into 85 villages (''mubans'').
