'''OZ Minerals''' was a mining company based in Adelaide, South Australia. Formerly listed on the Australian Securities Exchange, it was acquired by BHP in April 2023.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.bhp.com/news/media-centre/releases/2023/05/completion-of-oz-minerals-acquisition|title=Completion of OZ Minerals acquisition|work=BHP|access-date=2023-08-18|language=en|archive-date=18 August 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230818194641/https://www.bhp.com/news/media-centre/releases/2023/05/completion-of-oz-minerals-acquisition|url-status=dead}}</ref>

==History== OZ Minerals was formed on 1 July 2008 when Oxiana and Zinifex merged.<ref>[http://news.smh.com.au/business/zinifex-oxiana-merge-into-oz-minerals-20080616-2rcm.html Zinifex, Oxiana merge into OZ Minerals] ''Sydney Morning Herald'' 16 June 2008</ref><ref>[https://www.asx.com.au/asxpdf/20080701/pdf/319ycd5vk3fs0s.pdf Implementation of Ziniflex/Oxiana Scheme of Arrangement] Zinifex 1 July 2008</ref>

In February 2009 a takeover offer by China Minmetals was recommenced for acceptance by Oz Mineral's board of directors.<ref>[https://www.asx.com.au/asxpdf/20090216/pdf/31g2d2lz8x6649.pdf Recommended 82.5 Cents per Share All Cash Offer for Oz Minerals by Minmetals] Oz Minerals 16 February 2009</ref> The proposal was one of three high-profile moves by Chinese firms to acquire stakes in the Australian mineral sector in early 2009.

The China Minmetals offer along with other proposed purchases, especially the stake in Rio Tinto planned by Chinalco, caused great public furore, adding political pressure to block Minmetals.

In March 2009 the Government of Australia blocked the sale, citing national security concerns about the proximity of the Prominent Hill Mine to the RAAF Woomera Range Complex.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/28/business/worldbusiness/28mine.html|title=Australia Blocks China's Purchase of Mining Company|first=Bettina|last=Wassener|date=27 March 2009|work=New York Times}}</ref> A revised deal that excluded Prominent Hill was approved in April 2009.<ref>[https://www.ft.com/content/46a21686-2ff2-11de-a2f8-00144feabdc0 China's Minmetals wins approval for Oz deal] ''Financial Times'' 12 April 2009</ref>
