== Products == thumb|A third-generation Oura Ring, with pulse detection sensors visible at the bottom

The company's main product is the Oura Ring, which collects health data from the wearer's finger like a regular activity bracelet or heart rate monitor. The activity, heart rate, body temperature, respiratory rate and sleep data collected by the ring are transmitted wirelessly via Bluetooth to a smartphone app. Oura launched in 2015 with a Kickstarter campaign for the first-generation ring (which was bulkier than the newer versions). The second and third-generation rings came out in 2018 and 2021, respectively.<ref name="nytimes">{{Cite web | title = The Oura Ring Is a $300 Sleep Tracker That Provides Tons of Data. The operation of the Oura Ring is based on infrared LEDs. The light from the LEDs is reflected through the skin and the changes in the reflection are analysed by an algorithm developed by the company. This allows the heart rate and heart rate variability (as measured by RMSSD) to be determined. Oura's sensors capture the wearer's biometric data at significantly higher frequency than wearable products from competitors such as Apple Inc. and Fitbit.<ref>{{Cite book | last1 = Diamandis | first1 = Peter H. | last2 = Kotler | first2 = Steven | author-link = Peter Diamandis | author-link2 = Steven Kotler | title=The Future Is Faster Than You Think | date = 2020 | publisher = Simon and Schuster | oclc = 1126347047 | edition = 1st | page = 42 | isbn = 978-1-9821-0966-0 | location = New York, NY }}</ref> The device can also measure body temperature and menstrual cycle. == Reception == === Innovation === As a start-up, Oura Health has been praised for its innovation in the field of wearable electronics. The smart ring was listed as one of the ''Time's'' "100 Best Inventions of 2020" after gaining media attention from it being used by players in the NBA.<ref>{{Cite magazine|title=Oura Ring: The 100 Best Inventions of 2020|url=https://time.com/collection/best-inventions-2020/5911381/oura-ring/|access-date=2021-10-28|magazine=Time|language=en}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|last=Sprung|first=Shlomo|title=Oura CEO Explains Why NBA Bought 2,000 Of Its $300 Smart Rings|url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/shlomosprung/2020/06/25/oura-nba-smart-rings-coronavirus-orlando-covid-pandemic-shaq-dell-benioff/|access-date=2021-10-28|website=Forbes|language=en}}</ref>

== Controversy ==

=== Accuracy === Oura initially received some criticism for the accuracy of their products while being also credited for it.<ref>{{Cite magazine |title=Is the Oura Ring Worth the Hype? Admittedly, Yeah |url=https://www.wired.com/review/oura-ring/ |access-date=2022-05-18 |magazine=Wired |language=en-US}}</ref> A test on the second-generation ring found that on average their sleep tracking feature was only 58.9% accurate. However, their third-generation ring has shown significantly better accuracy in sleep tracking.<ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Cao |first1=Rui |last2=Azimi |first2=Iman |last3=Sarhaddi |first3=Fatemeh |last4=Niela-Vilen |first4=Hannakaisa |last5=Axelin |first5=Anna |last6=Liljeberg |first6=Pasi |last7=Rahmani |first7=Amir M. |date=2022-01-18 |title=Accuracy Assessment of Oura Ring Nocturnal Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability in Comparison With Electrocardiography in Time and Frequency Domains: Comprehensive Analysis |journal=Journal of Medical Internet Research |volume=24 |issue=1 |article-number=e27487 |doi=10.2196/27487 |issn=1438-8871 |pmc=8808342 |pmid=35040799 |doi-access=free }}</ref>

Oura's workout heart rate measurement during exercise does not ({{as of|2022|07|alt=as of summer 2022}}) match the measurement accuracy of wearable heart rate sensors like the Polar H10. The ring must be very tight on the finger for the Oura Ring to measure workout heart rate.{{cn|date=April 2025}}

=== Battery safety concerns === In December 2025, Oura faced a wave of public scrutiny following reports on Reddit that some Oura Rings had overheated, with users posting images of devices that appeared scorched or partially melted.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Oura users report smoking, overheating rings - what we know |url=https://www.zdnet.com/article/oura-ring-smoking-overheating-battery/ |access-date=2025-12-13 |website=ZDNET |language=en}}</ref> Multiple individuals alleged that their rings became excessively hot either during charging or while worn, with one user writing that they "felt a fire" on their finger before removing the device.<ref>{{Cite news |last=Small |first=Jonathan |date=December 12, 2025 |title=Oura Rings Spark Safety Concerns After Overheating Reports on Reddit |url=https://www.entrepreneur.com/business-news/oura-rings-spark-safety-concerns-after-overheating-reports/500757 |work=Entrepreneur}}</ref> Oura responded by characterizing the incidents as "extremely rare" and stated that internal reviews found no evidence of a broader safety issue.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Boxall |first=Andy |date=2025-12-09 |title=Oura responds to safety concerns after Reddit posts show burnt smart rings |url=https://www.androidpolice.com/oura-responds-to-safety-concerns-after-reddit-posts-show-burnt-smart-rings/ |access-date=2025-12-13 |website=Android Police |language=en}}</ref>

=== Membership fees === After the release of the third-generation ring, Oura released a US$5.99 monthly membership (with a one-month free trial) for their products that put certain aspects of user data behind a paywall. The release of this membership program received much criticism and anger from Oura users and reviewers who highlighted the expensive cost of the membership on top of the US$299 price of the Oura Ring.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Robinson |first=Tammy |date=2023-10-09 |title=Oura Ring Corporate Office |url=https://vps112765.inmotionhosting.com/oura-ring-corporate-office/ |access-date=2026-03-30 |website=Corporate Office HQ |language=en-US}}</ref>

=== Psychological impact === A 2025 article in Vox by Adam Clark Estes described a six-month experiment using multiple health-tracking devices, including the Apple Watch, Oura Ring, and Whoop band. The author reported that extensive self-tracking did not improve well-being and instead led to increased anxiety, compulsive behavior, and overreliance on health data. The article suggested that while such devices can provide useful insights, excessive monitoring may overwhelm users and contribute to negative psychological effects if not used in moderation.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Estes |first=Adam Clark |date=2025-06-26 |title=Take off your Oura Ring |url=https://www.vox.com/technology/417713/apple-watch-oura-whoop-health-tracking-fitness |access-date=2026-03-30 |website=Vox |language=en-US}}</ref>

In a 2025 blog review on Gene Food, John O’Connor said he discontinued use of the Oura Ring, criticizing its accuracy for step and sleep tracking and suggesting that its readiness scores could sometimes create negative psychological effects.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2019-11-21 |title=Why I Stopped Wearing an Oura Ring |url=https://www.mygenefood.com/blog/why-i-stopped-wearing-an-oura-ring/ |access-date=2026-03-30 |website=Gene Food |language=en-US}}</ref>

=== Privacy concerns and Palantir controversy === Oura faced intense backlash in 2025 after the company's CEO announced a data-sharing partnership with Palantir, the security and defense data analytics company.<ref>{{cite web |date=2025 |title=Oura health tracking data conspiracies |url=https://www.newsnationnow.com/business/tech/oura-health-tracking-data-conspiracies/ |access-date=2026-03-30 |website=NewsNation}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |last=Parmar |first=Tekendra |date=2025-09-04 |title=How Oura Got Caught in a TikTok Conspiracy Storm |url=https://www.inc.com/tekendra-parmar/oura-ring-got-caught-in-a-tiktok-conspiracy-storm/91235293 |access-date=2026-03-30 |website=Inc.}}</ref> A report noted that the situation sparked concern among some users about how sensitive biometric data—such as sleep patterns, heart rate, and menstrual cycle information—might be handled or protected. The CEO later clarified that only data from the United States Department of Defense customers would be shared in segregated systems. The controversy led to many customers publicly announcing on social media platforms such as TikTok that they would no longer wear their rings .<ref>{{cite web |title=What the Oura Ring–Palantir controversy means for your data |url=https://www.cosmopolitan.com/uk/reports/a65990794/oura-ring-palantir/ |website=Cosmopolitan |date=2025 |access-date=2026-03-30}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |last=Quiroz-Gutierrez |first=Marco |title=Ōura CEO insists they’ll never sell your data as customers publicly ditch rings over privacy fears tied to Defense Department and Palantir |url=https://fortune.com/2025/09/09/oura-ceo-tom-hale-data-privacy-oura-ring-defense-department-palantir/ |access-date=2026-03-30 |website=Fortune |language=en}}</ref>
