It is [[Endemism|endemic]] to [[Kentucky]],<ref name=IUCN/><ref name=NatureServe/> where it is found in 16 caves in four southeastern counties in the [[Cumberland River]] basin.<ref name=NatureServe/>

Formerly a subspecies of [[Orconectes australis|O. australis]], it was raised to species status by Buhay and [[Keith A. Crandall|Crandall]] in 2008.<ref name=IUCN/>
