==Meaning of title== The phrase "On the Mall" refers to the Mall in Central Park, New York City, where Goldman's Band frequently performed. Goldman composed "On the Mall" possibly as early as 1922, but published the march in 1923 to honor Elkan Naumburg, who funded the construction of the new Naumburg Bandshell. "On the Mall" premiered there on September 29, 1923, with Franz Kaltenborn as conductor and Naumburg in attendance.<ref>{{cite web |magazine=Naumburg Orchestral Concerts |date=2013 |accessdate=September 15, 2013 |url=http://www.naumburgconcerts.org/artist.php?view=bio&bid=2311 |title=Music pavilion |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304023310/http://www.naumburgconcerts.org/artist.php?view=bio&bid=2311 |archivedate=March 4, 2016 }} * See {{cite web |url=http://americanbandmasters.org/pdfs/ABA_Goldman_Citation.pdf |title=The Edwin Franko Goldman Memorial Citation |first1=Victor William |last1=Zajec |first2=Raoul F. |last2=Camus |year=2012 |accessdate=September 13, 2013 |location=New York |publisher=American Bandmasters Association |archive-date=December 4, 2013 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131204220319/http://www.americanbandmasters.org/pdfs/ABA_Goldman_Citation.pdf |url-status=dead }} * See also {{cite news |url=https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/investigate/vc_majorthefts/arttheft/NSAF/010303/view |title=The Goldman Band on the Mall, Central Park |magazine=National Stolen Art File |first=Frank |last=Keane |location=Washington, DC |publisher=Federal Bureau of Investigation |date=1933 |accessdate=September 13, 2013 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160305152442/https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/investigate/vc_majorthefts/arttheft/NSAF/010303/view |archivedate=March 5, 2016 }}</ref>

==Singing, whistling, lyricizing== In a technique identified with Goldman, the trio (third strain) is predominantly sung by the band members and then repeated, after a breakstrain, with whistling. A great believer in public participation as Goldman toured with his band in countless venues, he encouraged audiences likewise in "On the Mall" to sing along and then whistle with the band.<ref>{{cite news |url=http://www.jwpepper.com/2477467.item#.UjOfSJco6P8 |title=On the mall concert march |magazine=JWPepper |date=2013 |accessdate=September 13, 2013}}Item 2477466. Bands frequently camouflage the piccolo into the whistling to enhance its volume.</ref> Audience clapping in sync with the score is also common. The concluding strain of the march can be sung with lyrics written by Goldman's wife Adelaide Maibrunn Goldman.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.lyricszoo.com/river-city-brass-band/on-the-mall/ |title='On the Mall' lyrics |location=Chatham, New Jersey |publisher=River City Brass Band |first=Adelaide Maibrunn |last=Goldman |date=1923 |accessdate=September 15, 2013 |magazine=Lyrics zoo}}</ref> To reinforce the physical setting and the title, renditions have been known to substitute the words ''On the Mall'' in lieu of some of the lyrics.
