It is situated between Bowburn and Quarrington Hill. In the Middle Ages, Old Quarrington was the centre of a district of County Durham called “Queringdonshire" (Quarringtonshire), which contained nearby Sherburn, Shadforth, Cassop, Wingate and Whitwell House.<ref name=Bowburn/>
