==History== Also known as Great Ningo, the inhabitants have always been a fishing and farming community. They form part of the Ga-Adangbe people. The name Ningo has a much more widely known and accepted history as derived from the Ga–Dangme words ''nu'' meaning water and ''ngoo'' meaning salt.<ref>{{cite web|title=Old Nongo|url=https://sites.google.com/site/ghanaplacenames/database/greater-accra/old-ningo|website=Ghana Place Names|publisher=Ghana Place Names|access-date=8 November 2015}}</ref> However, there is compelling evidence pointing to a more interesting naming origin. The ''Encyclopædia Metropolitana'', published in 1817, has this entry: "Ningo, near which the second Danish castle, Friedensburg, is placed, is 43 miles from Akra. The history of the people of Ningo is closely linked to that of the Ga-Dangme people.

The Danish were the first European settlers here, establishing Fort Fredensborg<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.google.com/maps/place/Fort+Fredenzburg/@5.7446018,0.1810722,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x102089cd17da363d:0x9f81ea04c77c820d!8m2!3d5.7445965!4d0.1832609|title=Fort Fredenzburg · Unnamed Road, Old Ningo, Ghana|website=Google Maps}}</ref> in 1734. The town was developed as a slave-trading station as part of Danish Guinea. However, with the abolition of the slave trade the town dwindled in size, with the fort staffed by a single person.
