'''Odin''' is a utility software program developed and used by Samsung internally which is used to communicate with Samsung devices in '''Odin mode''' (also called '''download mode''') through the thor protocol.<ref name="u-boot CONFIG_CMD_THOR_DOWNLOAD">{{Cite web |date=8 November 2017 <!-- CommitDate in git show --pretty=fuller 9b92a8d76ad7efdcda58a4da1a773cf4674cdc86 --> |title=Convert CONFIG_CMD_THOR_DOWNLOAD to Kconfig |url=https://source.denx.de/u-boot/u-boot/-/blob/9b92a8d76ad7efdcda58a4da1a773cf4674cdc86/cmd/Kconfig#L307 |access-date=17 December 2025 |publisher=Das U-Boot |language=en-US}}</ref> It can be used to flash a custom recovery firmware image (as opposed to the stock recovery firmware image) to a Samsung Android device. == Usage == Although none of the publicly available downloads are authorized by Samsung itself, XDA-Developers consider the files offered on their Forum the safest option. For the usage of Odin, the phone needs to be in Download mode. For this, some key combination need to be pressed, such as <code>Power</code> + <code>Volume Down</code> + <code>Home</code>, or <code>Power</code> + <code>Volume Down</code> + <code>Bixby</code>, or connect to a computer while performing the <code>Volume Up</code> + <code>Volume Down</code> key combination.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Dumitru |first=Bogdan |title=Boot any Samsung Devices into Download Mode |url=https://www.odinflashtool.me/boot-any-samsung-devices-into-download-mode/ |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211202210434/https://www.odinflashtool.me/boot-any-samsung-devices-into-download-mode/ |archive-date=2 December 2021 |access-date=11 September 2021 |website=Odin |language=en}}</ref>

In 2026, Samsung started requiring to enable the ''Maintenance mode'' in the system settings before it is possible to access download mode.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2026-03-12 |title=Samsung's latest update is a serious gut punch to Galaxy power users (Update) |url=https://www.androidauthority.com/samsung-disables-odin-removes-download-mode-3648469/ |access-date=2026-03-18 |website=Android Authority |language=en}}</ref>

The thor protocol that Odin implements is used in many Samsung devices, including in some devices co-developed by Google and Samsung like the Galaxy Nexus.<ref>{{Cite web |title=[Q] [Galaxy Nexus] broken recovery mode, is there ROM package for Heimdall? |url=https://xdaforums.com/t/q-galaxy-nexus-broken-recovery-mode-is-there-rom-package-for-heimdall.1738562 |access-date=2025-12-17 |publisher=XDA Developers forum}}</ref> There is also an implementation of the thor protocol in Das U-Boot<ref name="u-boot CONFIG_CMD_THOR_DOWNLOAD" />.
