He previously served as a member of the East African Legislative Assembly from 2017 to 2022. He is the former assistant minister for finance in the 2008 Grand Coalition government and a former Member of the Kenyan Parliament.

On 11 December 2017, Oburu was elected to represent Kenya at the EALA.
