Ogdens is a hamlet in the civil parish of Hyde. The hamlet is named after Ogden Rooke, a local landowner who possessed Ogdens Purlieu in the latter half of the 17th century.<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20120316085750/http://www.thetanswells.com/new%20forest%20walks_files/Page386.htm New Forest Walks, page 386]</ref> Purlieu is a Norman-French word meaning "the outskirts of a forest" – a place free from forest laws.
