==Football career==
Chalk was born in the Bitterne area of Southampton<ref name = Joyce>{{cite book |title=Football League Players' Records 1888 to 1939|last=Joyce|first=Michael |year=2004 |publisher=Tony Brown |location=Nottingham|isbn=1-899468-67-6|page=51}}</ref> and educated at the local Church of England School. He was signed by Southampton as an amateur in May 1937 and awarded a professional contract four months later. ==Later career== At the end of the season, Chalk asked to be released from his contract and he joined the local police force, which he served until 1969.
