'''Norbert Pardi''' (born February 19, 1981) is a Hungarian biochemist researcher known for his contributions to the mRNA vaccine technology. He currently holds the position of a tenured associate professor of microbiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Pardi has conducted pioneering work in the development of mRNA vaccines, including those targeting influenza. He also contributed to the better understanding of the mechanism of action of mRNA vaccines.<ref>{{cite web |title=Norbert Pardi |url=https://www.ae-info.org/ae/Member/Pardi_Norbert |website=ae-info.org |publisher=Academia of Europe |access-date=2 May 2025}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=Norbert Pardi, PhD |url=https://www.med.upenn.edu/apps/faculty/index.php/g349/p8483546 |website=med.upenn.edu |publisher=Upenn Medicine |access-date=2 May 2025}}</ref><ref>{{cite news |last1=Blech |first1=Jörg |title=From Coronavirus to a Cancer Vaccine? |url=https://www.spiegel.de/international/world/biontech-s-long-term-dream-from-coronavirus-to-a-cancer-vaccine-a-b136a53d-baee-4b94-b43c-e8c45faa19d1 |access-date=2 May 2025 |agency=Spiegel |publisher=Spiegel.de |date=13 November 2020}}</ref><ref>{{cite news |last1=Dolgin |first1=Elie |title=La révolution des vaccins à ARN |url=https://www.pourlascience.fr/sd/medecine/la-revolution-des-vaccins-a-arn-21508.php |access-date=5 May 2025 |issue=522 |publisher=Pourlascience.fr |date=18 March 2021}}</ref>

== Early life and education == Norbert Pardi grew up in the Hungarian town of Kisújszállás. He earned an MSc and PhD degree in Biochemistry and Genetics at the University of Szeged in Hungary before moving to the United States in 2011 to work at the University of Pennsylvania.<ref>{{cite web |title=Norbert Pardi, PhD |url=https://academicmedicaleducation.com/norbert-pardi-phd |website=academicmedicaleducation.com |access-date=2 May 2025}}</ref>

== Career == At the University of Pennsylvania, Pardi started as a postdoctoral fellow. His scientific work has mainly focused on the delivery of nucleoside-modified mRNA in vivo to develop mRNA-based therapeutics and vaccines. He was mentored by the two mRNA-pioneers and nobelists Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman and published several key papers, that contributed to the advancement of the mRNA vaccine technology.<ref>{{cite web |title=Featured News |url=https://www.pennmedicine.org/news/news-blog/2021/october/mentorship-and-mrna-microbiology-professor-researches-mrna-flu-vaccine |website=pennmedicine.org |publisher=University of Pennsylvania |access-date=2 May 2025}}</ref><ref>{{cite news |title=mRNA vaccines — a new era in vaccinology |url=https://www.nature.com/articles/nrd.2017.243 |access-date=2 May 2025 |agency=Nature |publisher=Nature Reviews Drug Discovery |date=12 January 2018}}</ref> After becoming a research assistant professor in 2019, Pardi became an assistant professor in 2021. Later on in 2024 he was offered the position of associate professor of Microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania, which he currently holds. He has more than 16 000 Citations and an h-Index of 54<ref>{{cite web |title=Norber Pardi |url=https://scholar.google.hu/citations?user=zYEzjjkAAAAJ&hl=en |website=Google Scholar |access-date=2 May 2025}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=First Episode of Molecular Therapy Podcast Features Dr. Norbert Pardi |url=https://www.asgct.org/publications/news/december-2023/molecular-therapy-podcast-norbert-pardi-phd |website=asgct.org |publisher=American society of Gene and Cell Therapy |access-date=2 May 2025}}</ref>

== Awards and patents == Several awards were given to Norbert Pardi.

In 2017, he received the Postdoctoral Student Award from the Duke Center for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Immunology and Immunogen Discovery (CHAVI-ID).

Three years later in 2020, Pardi was honoured with the 2020 Young Investigator Award of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID)<ref>{{cite web |title=ESCMID Young Investigator Awards |url=https://2020.eccmid.org/scientific_programme/awards_and_grants_2020/escmid_young_investigator_awards_for_research_in_cm_and_id |website=2020.eccmid.org |publisher=European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious diseases |access-date=2 May 2025}}</ref>

In 2021, he received the Dennis Gabor Inventor Award. In the same year, Pardi was also awarded the prestigious BIAL Award in Biomedicine as lead author of the honoured scientific paper.<ref>{{cite web |title=The Winning Work |url=https://bialfoundation.com/com/awards/bial-award-in-biomedicine-2021/ |website=the bial foundation |publisher=BIAL Foundation |access-date=1 May 2025}}</ref>

Pardi has invented more than 16 technological advancements that led to being patented. Among them, ''Nucleoside-modified RNA for inducing an immune response against zika virus'' and ''Chimeric Influenza Virus Hemagglutinin mRNA-Based Vaccines and Uses Thereof''.<ref>{{cite web |title=Patents of Pardi Norbert |url=https://patents.justia.com/search?q=norbert+pardi |website=Justia Patent |access-date=2 May 2025}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=Patents Norbert Pardi |url=https://worldwide.espacenet.com/patent/search?q=norbert%20pardi |website=WorldWideEpascenet.com |access-date=2 May 2025}}</ref>
