It lies {{convert|6|mi|km|1}} east of Northallerton, on the border of the North York Moors national park. During 1870–72 Nether Silton was described as, "a chapelry in Leake parish, N. R. Yorkshire; 6½ miles E of Northallerton r. station. Post town, Thirsk. Real property, £1,702. Pop. 178. Houses, 45."<ref name="Historical Descriptions">{{cite web|url=http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/14214|title=Gazetteer entries for Nether Silton|accessdate=9 January 2018|publisher=Vision of Britain}}</ref> by John Marius Wilson, ''Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales''.

The name Silton derives from the Old Norse personal name ''Sylfa'' or the Old English ''scelf'' meaning 'shelf', and the Old English ''tūn'' meaning 'settlement'.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://kepn.nottingham.ac.uk/map/place/Yorkshire%20NR/Nether%20Silton|title=Nether Silton |website=Key to English Place-Names |publisher=The Institute for Name-Studies |access-date=26 October 2025}}</ref>

==Then and now==

===Boundary classification and growth=== Historically areas were classified into Ancient Counties, alternatively known as Historic counties of England, Nether Silton was within the county of Yorkshire.<ref name="Relationships / unit history of NETHER SILTON">{{cite web|url=http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/unit/10468371|title=Unit history|accessdate=9 January 2018|publisher=Vision of Britain}}</ref> These Ancient Counties were then separated further, Nether Silton was within the North Riding of Yorkshire.<ref name="Relationships / unit history of NETHER SILTON"/> Areas were then separated into Poor Law Union/Registration district, Nether Silton came under Northallerton.<ref name="Relationships / unit history of NETHER SILTON"/> Nether Silton then became part of Birdforth, an Ancient District.<ref name="Relationships / unit history of NETHER SILTON"/> Then formed part of a Registration sub-District under Northallerton.<ref name="Relationships / unit history of NETHER SILTON"/> Then became a Sanitary District under the area of Northallerton.<ref name="Relationships / unit history of NETHER SILTON"/> Again, continued to be part of Northallerton under Local government district.<ref name="Relationships / unit history of NETHER SILTON"/> Previously part of Leake civil parish, Nether Silton became a parish in its own right in 1866.<ref name="Relationships / unit history of NETHER SILTON"/> The only growth in the area was in 1934, an increase of {{convert|120|acre|km2}} to {{convert|1658|acre|km2}}, through gaining part of Leake.<ref name="Acreage">{{cite web |url=http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/census/table_page.jsp?tab_id=EW1951COU_M3&u_id=10468371&show=DB| title= Boundary growth| accessdate=5 April 2012 |publisher=Vision of Britain}}</ref> thumb|A graph showing the changing population of Nether Silton<ref name="Demographic Statistics">{{cite web |url=http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/dissemination/LeadTableView.do?a=7&b=797750&c=Nether+Silton&d=16&e=15&g=475620&i=1001x1003x1004&o=1&m=0&r=1&s=1331921436248&enc=1&dsFamilyId=781| title= Parish Profile – People| accessdate=16 March 2012 |publisher=Office for National Statistics|work=Neighbourhood Statistics}}</ref><ref name="Historical statistics/population">{{cite web |url=http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/data_cube_page.jsp?data_theme=T_POP&data_cube=N_GENDER&u_id=10468371&c_id=10001043&add=Y| title=Historical populations| accessdate=14 March 2012 |publisher= Vision of Britain}}</ref>

From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the Hambleton District, it is now administered by the unitary North Yorkshire Council.

===Demographics=== In 1881 the total population occupying Nether Silton was 176, consisting of 96 males and 80 females.<ref name="Historical statistics/population"/> The changing population graph of Nether Silton, shows that since 1881 the population of those living in the village has continued to decrease. According to data from the Census the population in 2001 was 93, consisting of 44 males and 49 females.<ref name="Demographic Statistics"/> 55% of the population are aged 45 years and above and the mean age of the population is 46.6 years.<ref name="Demographic Statistics"/> Therefore, from the demographic statistics, Nether Silton has a declining population and also an emerging ageing population. thumb|A graph showing the occupational structure of Nether Silton in 1881<ref name="Employment statistics">{{cite web|url= http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/data_cube_page.jsp?data_theme=T_IND&data_cube=N_OCC_ORDER1881&u_id=10468371&c_id=10001043&add=Y |title= Historical employment |date=25 April 2012|publisher=Vision of Britain}}</ref> This now appears to have all changed with the 2011 census measuring the population at 276.

===Employment=== In 1881, 36 out of the 44 males were employed in agriculture,<ref name="Employment statistics"/> therefore the dominant occupation. During the same period of time, the majority of females occupations are not specified.<ref name="Employment statistics"/> According to data obtained from the 2001 Census<ref name="Employment Statistics">{{cite web |url=http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/dissemination/LeadTableView.do?a=3&b=797750&c=Nether+Silton&d=16&e=15&g=475620&i=1001x1003x1004&o=1&m=0&r=1&s=1331811160432&enc=1&dsFamilyId=783| title= Parish Profile – Work and Qualifications| accessdate=15 March 2012 |publisher=Office for National Statistics|work=Neighbourhood Statistics}}</ref> employment was equally divided between extractive and manufacturing industries (agriculture, fishing, hunting, forestry, quarrying, mining, manufacturing, construction, electricity, gas and water supply), and service industries (transport, retail, hotel, catering, property, storage, public administration and defence, finance, communication, education, health and social work). Agriculture is now grouped under manufacturing industries so the number of those employed in agriculture is unknown. But with the area's history of agriculture dominating employment for males<ref name="Employment statistics"/> it is probable that agriculture is an employer to some extent in Nether Silton. Therefore, when summarising the 2001 census data, it would be correct to say that agriculture no longer dominates employment as it did in 1881, as residents are now moving into jobs within the service sector.<ref name="Employment Statistics"/> thumb|A graph showing the number of houses in Nether Sitlon<ref name="Housing statistics">{{cite web|url=http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/data_cube_page.jsp?data_theme=T_HOUS&data_cube=N_HOUSES&u_id=10468371&c_id=10001043&add=Y|title=Historical housing|accessdate=4 April 2012|publisher=Vision of Britain}}</ref><ref name="Neighbourhood Statistics">{{cite web |url=http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/dissemination/LeadTableView.do?a=7&b=797750&c=Nether+Silton&d=16&e=15&g=475620&i=1001x1003x1004&m=0&r=1&s=1333573525909&enc=1&dsFamilyId=787| title= Parish Profile – Accommodation and Tenure| accessdate=4 April 2012 |publisher=Office for National Statistics|work=Neighbourhood Statistics}}</ref>

===Housing=== From the graph showing the changing number of houses in Nether Silton, the number of houses in the village has varied only slightly and remained constantly low. In 1881 the number of houses was 40,<ref name="Housing statistics"/> and in 2001 the number of houses remained at 40.<ref name="Neighbourhood Statistics"/> Although there has not always been the same number of houses in the area, there have only been minor fluctuations in the total number of houses. <!-- Commented out: thumb|right|Roll of Honour, Yorkshire Regiment Remembrance website<ref name="Roll of Honour">{{cite web|url=http://www.ww1-yorkshires.org.uk/html-files/nether-silton.htm| title= Roll of Honour, War Memorial| accessdate=30 April 2012 |publisher=Edward Nicholl }}</ref> -->
