{{Short description|Type of urinary diversion}}
A '''neobladder''' is one of the three main types of permanent urinary diversion that is surgically created to allow the body to eliminate urine.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Neobladder: What Is It and Why Someone Might Need a Neobladder |url=https://bcan.org/the-top-reasons-why-someone-might-need-a-neobladder/ |access-date=2025-12-23 |website=Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network |language=en-US}}</ref><ref name=":0">{{Cite web |title=Neobladder reconstruction - Mayo Clinic |url=https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/neobladder-reconstruction/about/pac-20385066 |access-date=2025-12-23 |website=www.mayoclinic.org |language=en}}</ref> Although there are other situations when a neobladder might be used, they are most commonly found in patients who have had their urinary bladders removed as a result of bladder cancer.<ref>{{Cite web |last=bcan_admin |date=2024-09-16 |title=Bladder Removal Surgery: What is a Cystectomy? |url=https://bcan.org/bladder-removal-surgery/ |access-date=2025-12-23 |website=Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network |language=en-US}}</ref> The neobladder is created using a section of the patient's small intestine and connected to their ureters and urethra.<ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Chang |first1=DwayneT. == Formation == There are various approaches to surgically creating a neobladder,<ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Barone |first1=Biagio |last2=Napolitano |first2=Luigi |last3=Reccia |first3=Pasquale |last4=Calace |first4=Francesco Paolo |last5=De Luca |first5=Luigi |last6=Olivetta |first6=Michelangelo |last7=Stizzo |first7=Marco |last8=Rubinacci |first8=Andrea |last9=Della Rosa |first9=Giampiero |last10=Lecce |first10=Arturo |last11=Romano |first11=Lorenzo |last12=Sciorio |first12=Carmine |last13=Spirito |first13=Lorenzo |last14=Mattiello |first14=Gennaro |last15=Vastarella |first15=Maria Giovanna |date=2024-04-08 |title=Advances in Urinary Diversion: From Cutaneous Ureterostomy to Orthotopic Neobladder Reconstruction—A Comprehensive Review |journal=Journal of Personalized Medicine |language=en |volume=14 |issue=4 |pages=392 |doi=10.3390/jpm14040392 |doi-access=free |issn=2075-4426 |pmc=11051023 |pmid=38673019}}</ref><ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Gakis |first1=Georgios |last2=Stenzl |first2=Arnulf |date=2010-12-01 |title=Ileal Neobladder and Its Variants |url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1569905610001211 |journal=European Urology Supplements |series=Incorporating the EAU-EBU Update Series |volume=9 |issue=10 |pages=745–753 |doi=10.1016/j.eursup.2010.10.001 |issn=1569-9056|url-access=subscription }}</ref><ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Tan |first1=Wei Shen |last2=Lamb |first2=Benjamin W. |last3=Kelly |first3=John D. |date=2016-03-03 |title=Evolution of the neobladder: A critical review of open and intracorporeal neobladder reconstruction techniques |url=https://doi.org/10.3109/21681805.2016.1141318 |journal=Scandinavian Journal of Urology |volume=50 |issue=2 |pages=95–103 |doi=10.3109/21681805.2016.1141318 |issn=2168-1805 |pmid=26882458|doi-access=free }}</ref><ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Chang |first1=DwayneT. The patients ureters and urethra are then connected to this new organ.
== Advantages == Urine is collected from the ureters and stored internally. Thus, unlike with other types of urinary diversion, urination closely matches the natural process, occurring through the urethra at a time the patient chooses. There is typically no need for catheterization. Furthermore, there is no need to care for a stoma or to utilize an external collection device. The patient may therefore experience an improved quality of life and post-operative sexual function.<ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Cicione |first1=A. |last2=De Nunzio |first2=C. |last3=Lombardo |first3=R. |last4=Trucchi |first4=A. |last5=Manno |first5=S. |last6=Lima |first6=E. |last7=Tubaro |first7=A. |date=2020 |title=Complications and quality of life of ileal conduit, orthotopic neobladder and ureterocutaneostomy: systematic review of reports using the Clavien-Dindo Classification - Minerva Urologica e Nefrologica 2020 August;72(4):408-19 |url=https://www.minervamedica.it/en/journals/minerva-urology-nephrology/article.php?cod=R19Y2020N04A0408 |journal=Minerva Urologica e Nefrologica = the Italian Journal of Urology and Nephrology |language=en |volume=72 |issue=4 |pages=408–419 |doi=10.23736/s0393-2249.20.03641-3 |pmid=32734749 |access-date=2025-08-13|url-access=subscription }}</ref><ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Pronk |first1=Claudia E. |last2=Albers |first2=Leonore F. |last3=Kuijper |first3=Lothar D. == Disadvantages == The surgery is more complex and longer than for other types of urinary diversion. Urinary incontinence is normal in the weeks and months following surgery and takes time and effort to control. Nighttime continence may never be achievable. In some cases, catheterization may be necessary to completely empty the neobladder.<ref name=":0" /><ref>{{Cite web |title=What Is Urinary Diversion Surgery? |url=https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/procedures/12546-urinary-reconstruction--diversion |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250619185651/https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/procedures/12546-urinary-reconstruction--diversion |archive-date=2025-06-19 |access-date=2025-08-13 |website=Cleveland Clinic |language=en}}</ref>
== Notable neobladders == In 2025, Deion Sanders revealed that he received a radical cystectomy and a neobladder following his bladder cancer diagnosis.<ref>{{Cite news |last=Boden |first=Sarah |date=2025-08-02 |title=How surgeons build a new bladder for cancer patients like Deion Sanders |url=https://www.npr.org/sections/shots-health-news/2025/08/02/nx-s1-5490475/neobladder-bladder-reconstruction-deion-sanders-cancer |access-date=2025-08-13 |work=NPR |language=en}}</ref>
