Its velocity with respect to the [[cosmic microwave background]] is {{val|10875|9|u=km/s|fmt=commas}}, which corresponds to a [[Hubble's law|Hubble distance]] of {{convert|160.40 ± 11.23|Mpc|Mly|abbr=on|lk=on|order=flip}}.{{r|ned}} Additionally, one ''non-redshift'' measurement gives a slightly farther distance of {{convert|163.000|Mpc|Mly|abbr=on|lk=off|order=flip}}.{{r|ned-distance}} It was discovered by British astronomer [[John Herschel]] on 26 April 1830.{{r|selig}}

NGC 5722 is a [[Seyfert galaxy|Seyfert]] II galaxy, i.e. it has a [[quasar]]-like nucleus with very high surface brightnesses whose spectra reveal strong, high-ionisation emission lines, but unlike quasars, the host galaxy is clearly detectable.{{r|seyfert|SIMBAD}}
