Its velocity with respect to the [[cosmic microwave background]] is {{val|2383|28|u=km/s|fmt=commas}}, which corresponds to a [[Hubble's law|Hubble distance]] of {{convert|35.14 ± 2.51|Mpc|Mly|abbr=on|lk=on|order=flip}}.{{r|ned}} However, 25 ''non-redshift'' measurements give a closer mean distance of {{convert|24.080 ± 1.031|Mpc|Mly|abbr=on|lk=off|order=flip}}.{{r|ned-distance}} It was discovered by German-British astronomer [[William Herschel]] on 28 March 1786.{{r|Herschel|selig}}

NGC{{nbsp}}5061 is a [[Seyfert galaxy|Seyfert]] II galaxy, i.e. it has a [[quasar]]-like nucleus with very high surface brightnesses whose spectra reveal strong, high-ionisation emission lines, but unlike quasars, the host galaxy is clearly detectable.{{r|SIMBAD}}

The NGC 5061 group (also known as [[Lyons Groups of Galaxies|LGG]] 341) contains 10 galaxies, including [[NGC 5078]], [[NGC 5085]], [[NGC 5101]], {{ill|IC 874|fr}}, {{ill|IC 4222|fr}}, {{ill|IC 4231|fr}}, and three galaxies from the [[European Southern Observatory|ESO]] catalogue.{{r|garcia}}
