In 2010, NCEE organized a pilot program with a $1.5 million planning grant from the Gates Foundation, that helped NCEE "work with states and districts" develop their Early College High School (ECHS) programs, through which students could take a mixture of high school and college classes, and receive both a high school diploma and up to two years of college credits. The goal was to insure that "students have mastered a set of basic requirements" and to reduce the "numbers of high school graduates who need remedial courses when they enroll in college."<ref name="NYT_Dillon_20100217">{{Cite news| issn = 0362-4331| last = Dillon| first = Sam| title = High Schools to Offer Plan to Graduate 2 Years Early| work = The New York Times| access-date = March 1, 2020| date = February 17, 2010| url = https://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/18/education/18educ.html}}</ref><ref name="NYT_Lewin_20100208">{{Cite news| title = For Students at Risk, Early College Proves a Draw |first= Tamar |last=Lewin|newspaper= The New York Times| access-date = March 1, 2020|date=February 8, 2010| url = https://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/08/education/08school.html}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.jff.org/sites/default/files/publications/Unconventional_Wisdom_PDF_033011.pdf |title=Unconventional Wisdom: A Profile of the Graduates of Early College High School |first1=Michael |last1=Webb |first2=Lia |last2=Mayka |date=March 2011 |work=Jobs for the Future |access-date=July 29, 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150513050035/http://www.jff.org/sites/default/files/publications/Unconventional_Wisdom_PDF_033011.pdf |archive-date=May 13, 2015 |url-status=dead }}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.newsweek.com/2010/06/13/america-s-best-high-schools-in-a-different-class.html |title=America's Best High Schools in a Different Class |work=Newsweek |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110119122403/http://www.newsweek.com/2010/06/13/america-s-best-high-schools-in-a-different-class.html |archive-date=January 19, 2011 }}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url= http://www.newsweek.com/nations-most-elite-public-high-schools-73623?piano_t=1 |title=The Nation's Most Elite Public High Schools |first=Jay |last=Mathews |work=Newsweek |date=July 13, 2010 |access-date=July 29, 2014}}</ref>
