{{Short description|Sponsoring organization for the .museum domain}} The '''Museum Domain Management Association''' ('''MuseDoma''') was created in 2000 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and the J. Paul Getty Trust. MuseDoma is the sponsoring organization for the {{mono|.museum}} top-level domain.

== History ==

MuseDoma was created in 2000 as a non-profit trade association based in Delaware.<ref name="archimuse 2001">{{cite web|url=https://www.archimuse.com/mw2001/papers/hamma/hamma.html|title=A Top Level Museum Domain|website=Archimuse.com|date=2001|accessdate=8 October 2020}}</ref>

In October 2001, the ICANN and the Museum Domain Management Association launched the ICANN's first ever sponsored top-level domain, {{mono|.museum}}. The new top-level domain was reserved to official museums worldwide.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.icann.org/news/announcement-2001-10-18-en|title=ICANN Completes First Sponsored TLD Agreement; .museum to Go Live in November|website=Icann.org|date=18 October 2001|accessdate=23 December 2019}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.computerworld.com/article/2584620/new--museum-domain-name-to-go-live-in-november.html|title=New .museum domain name to go live in November|website=Computerworld.com|date=19 October 2001|author=Todd R. Paul Getty Trust was a member of MuseDoma's board.<ref name="liberation 2001">{{cite web|url=https://www.liberation.fr/ecrans/2001/05/26/toutes-les-toiles-du-monde-sur-la-toile_366154|title=Toutes les toiles du monde sur la Toile|website=Liberation.fr|date=26 May 2001|author=Edouard Launet|language=fr}}</ref>

At the very beginning, the name Museum Domain Management Association was shortened to its initials, MDMA, until the management team was advised to change it since it was exactly the same initials as the homonymous drug (MDMA).<ref name="liberation 2001"/>

== Description ==

The {{mono|.museum}} top-level domain is not available for all museums, a list of conditions (non-profit, permanent activity, ...) must be met. Many virtual museums cannot apply for a {{mono|.museum}} domain name.<ref name="archimuse 2001"/>
