'''MultiCam''' is a camouflage pattern designed for use in a wide range of environments and conditions which was developed and is produced by American company Crye Precision.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.cryeprecision.com/|title=Crye Precision|website=www.cryeprecision.com|access-date=5 June 2022|archive-date=9 February 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140209052348/http://www.cryeprecision.com/|url-status=live}}</ref> The pattern has found extensive adoption globally. Variants of it, some unlicensed, are in use with militaries worldwide, particularly with special forces and special operations units.
The pattern is also available for purchase for civilian usage. Derived from the original standard pattern, additional specified variants were developed and later introduced in late 2013, those are "Arid", "Tropic", "Alpine" and "Black".<ref>{{cite web |url=https://multicampattern.com/multicam_patterns/#multicam_pattern |title=Patterns | MultiCam® Family of Camouflage Patterns Page |access-date=5 June 2022 |archive-date=19 May 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220519160430/http://multicampattern.com/multicam_patterns/#multicam_pattern |url-status=live}}</ref>

The pattern was included in the U.S. Army's move to replace the 3-Color Desert and Woodland patterns, but in 2004 the U.S. Army chose the Universal Camouflage Pattern that came to be used in the Army Combat Uniform. Nonetheless, it remained in limited use by the U.S. Army special forces in the mid-to-late 2000s in Iraq and Afghanistan. MultiCam was also continually trialed for its "Future Force Warrior" program demonstrations.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www4.army.mil/ocpa/read.php?story_id_key=7481|title=Army displays latest warfighting innovations|publisher=U.S. Army|date=June 2005|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20050618103208/http://www4.army.mil/ocpa/read.php?story_id_key=7481|archive-date=18 June 2005}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=https://discover.dtic.mil/results/?q=ARL-TR-3626|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070624183131/http://www.arl.army.mil/arlreports/2005/ARL-TR-3626.pdf|archive-date=24 June 2007 |title=Future Force Warrior, Engineering Design Event Number 4 |first1=Daniel D. |last1=Turner |first2=Christian B. |last2=Carstens |first3=Joseph |last3=Torre |date=October 2005 |website=DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=Future Force Warrior: Advanced Technology Demonstration Update |url=https://ndiastorage.blob.core.usgovcloudapi.net/ndia/2005/smallarms/wednesday/edwards.pdf|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170816054141/https://ndiastorage.blob.core.usgovcloudapi.net/ndia/2005/smallarms/wednesday/edwards.pdf|archive-date=16 August 2017}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=https://soldiersystems.net/2014/01/30/objective-force-warrior-whats-that/|title=Objective Force Warrior? == Development == On 25 November 2013, Crye Precision unveiled a family of MultiCam variants, which they claim can reduce the visual and near-IR signature of a person operating in different environments.
==Appearance== [[File:Future Force Warrior 2007.jpg|thumb|250px|U.S. Army Rangers of 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment wearing MultiCam while demonstrating the Future Force Warrior project at Fort Bliss, Texas, in February 2007]]
MultiCam has a background of a brown to light tan gradient, overprinted with a dark green, olive green, and lime green gradient and a top layer of opaque dark brown and cream-colored shapes spread throughout the pattern.
This allows for the overall appearance to change from predominantly green to predominantly brown in different areas of the fabric, while having smaller shapes to break up the larger background areas.
The MultiCam color scheme in hex triplet is as follows:(i) Cream 524 [http://www.colorhexa.com/b8a78b B8A78B]; (ii) Dark Brown 530 [http://www.colorhexa.com/48352f 48352F]; (iii) Tan 525 [http://www.colorhexa.com/967860 967860]; (iv) Brown 529 [http://www.colorhexa.com/6f573f 6F573F]; (v) Dark Green 528 [http://www.colorhexa.com/5a613f 5A613F]; (vi) Olive 527 [http://www.colorhexa.com/8c7d50 8C7D50]; and (vii) Pale Green 526 [http://www.colorhexa.com/85755c 85755C].<ref>{{cite web|title=Multicam Brand Guide|url=http://multicampattern.com/wp-content/uploads/MultiCam-Brand-Guide.pdf|website=Multicam Pattern website|publisher=Crye Precision|access-date=4 July 2018|archive-date=14 April 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170414181053/http://multicampattern.com/wp-content/uploads/MultiCam-Brand-Guide.pdf|url-status=live}}</ref>

== Adoption ==
=== Australia ===
==== Army ==== On 19 November 2010, after trials by Australian special operations forces, the Australian Defence Force announced that MultiCam will be standard for all regular Australian Army personnel in Afghanistan. MultiCam, it is said, provided "troops with greater levels of concealment across the range of terrains in Afghanistan – urban, desert and green." Previously, depending upon the terrain, Australian troops had to transition between green and desert colored Australian Disruptive Pattern Camouflage Uniforms (DPCU or ''AUSCAM'').<ref name="defence1">[https://web.archive.org/web/20170309205848/http://www.defence.gov.au/defencenews/stories/2010/Nov/1119.htm New combat uniform makes troops job easier], ''Australian Department of Defence'', 19 November 2010.</ref><ref name="defence2">[https://web.archive.org/web/20110602025703/http://www.minister.defence.gov.au/ClareSpeechtpl.cfm?CurrentId=11103 Land Warfare Conference – Minister for Defence Materiel], Australian Department of Defence, 19 November 2010.</ref>
On 30 May 2011 the Defence Material Organisation announced that they had obtained licence to produce MultiCam in Australia for US$4.7 million and Crye would also design a new uniquely Australian pattern for another US$3.1 million.<ref>[http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-national/new-defence-uniforms-on-the-way-20110530-1fcay.html New defence uniforms on the way] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110611055631/http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-national/new-defence-uniforms-on-the-way-20110530-1fcay.html |date=11 June 2011}}, ''The Sydney Morning Herald'', 30 May 2011</ref>
The Australian Army decided to standardize MultiCam-patterned uniforms starting in October 2014 called the Australian Multicam Camouflage Uniform (AMCU). The Australian derivative retains colour and pattern elements of the previous DPCU pattern.
The AMCU is manufactured domestically by Australian Defence Apparel and Pacific Brands Workwear Group and comes in two variations, field and combat, using a tested Australian Multi-Camouflage Pattern that can operate in bush, desert, and jungle conditions. Previous DPCU Uniforms and Australian MultiCam Pattern Operational Combat Uniforms will be worn until all Army personnel have been issued with the AMCU.<ref name="defence3">[https://archive.today/20140924210016/http://www.armyrecognition.com/september_2014_global_defense_security_news_uk/australian_army_launches_new_multicam_camouflage_combat_uniform_at_chief_of_armys_exercise_2409141.html Australian Army launches new Multicam Camouflage Combat uniform at Chief of Army's exercise] – Armyrecognition.com, 24 September 2014</ref>
==== Air Force ==== In 2014 the Royal Australian Air Force began fielding a new MultiCam-based uniform to replace the DPCU, called the General Purpose Uniform (GPU), using the blue-and-grey colours of the RAAF.<ref name="telegraphau">{{cite web |title=A blue day for the air force |url=https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/ballina/a-blue-day-for-the-air-force/news-story/fca56275358b4e26d62d55e27850fc1b#/0 |website=Daily Telegraph |access-date=30 May 2026 |date=3 September 2014}}</ref> The uniform is not intended to be used as camouflage in warlike operations or environments.<ref>{{cite web |title=Q&A – Air Force General Purpose Uniform |url=http://www.airforce.gov.au/About-us/About-the-RAAF/Air-Force-General-Purpose-Uniform/Q-38-A/?RAAF-fPA3U3ErSBl+RhCVY8ZYvfrP6s4ghVcr |access-date=3 March 2014 |publisher=Royal Australian Air Force |archive-date=6 August 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140806032358/http://airforce.gov.au/About-us/About-the-RAAF/Air-Force-General-Purpose-Uniform/Q-38-A/?RAAF-fPA3U3ErSBl+RhCVY8ZYvfrP6s4ghVcr |url-status=live}}</ref><ref>{{cite news |title=RAAF personnel to receive new-look uniforms |url=http://www.mydailynews.com.au/news/RAAF-personnel-to-receive-new-look-uniforms/2185576/ |access-date=4 March 2014 |newspaper=Daily News |archive-date=9 March 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140309070806/http://www.mydailynews.com.au/news/RAAF-personnel-to-receive-new-look-uniforms/2185576/ |url-status=live}}</ref>
In June 2025 it was announced that the RAAF would transition to the Australian Multicam Camouflage Uniform by the end of the year as part of efforts to prepare the force for warfare in Australia's region. The GPU will continue to be authorised for wear on RAAF bases, but not on operations or exercises.<ref>{{cite news |last1=Campbell |first1=Eleanor |date=9 June 2025 |title='A joke': Air Force to replace signature blue for army camouflage |url=https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/8987136/australian-air-force-updates-to-camo-uniforms-for-combat/ |access-date=10 August 2025 |work=Canberra Times |language=en-au |archive-date=27 July 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20250727025543/https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/8987136/australian-air-force-updates-to-camo-uniforms-for-combat/ |url-status=live}}</ref>
==== Navy ==== In 2015, the Royal Australian Navy began their own testing of a new MultiCam uniform with a blue colourway, calling it the Maritime Multicam Pattern Uniform (MMPU).<ref name="navalnews">{{cite web |title=New Camouflage Uniform for the Royal Australian Navy |url=https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2021/11/new-camouflage-uniform-for-the-royal-australian-navy/ |website=Naval News |access-date=30 May 2026 |date=23 November 2021}}</ref>
The new uniform and pattern were intended to replace the Navy's grey-and-green Disruptive Pattern Naval Uniform (DPNU) by 2017.<ref>{{cite web |title=Tailored for maritime combat |url=https://news.navy.gov.au/en/May2016/Fleet/2930/Tailored-for-maritime-combat.htm#.X3pa5rLVKUk |website=Navy Daily |publisher=Royal Australian Navy |access-date=30 May 2026 |language=en |date=24 May 2016 |archive-date=16 May 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210516101133/https://news.navy.gov.au/en/May2016/Fleet/2930/Tailored-for-maritime-combat.htm#.X3pa5rLVKUk |url-status=dead}}</ref>
In 2019, the Navy announced that it was fielding a variant of the new AMCU including the design and cut of the uniform itself, and reverting to the grey-and-green colours of the DPNU.<ref>{{cite web |title=New rigs on trial |url=http://news.navy.gov.au/en/Mar2019/Fleet/5117/New-rigs-on-trial.htm#.X3pVmLLVKUk |website=Navy Daily |publisher=Royal Australian Navy |access-date=30 May 2026 |language=en |date=March 2019 |archive-date=11 November 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201111235921/https://news.navy.gov.au/en/Mar2019/Fleet/5117/New-rigs-on-trial.htm#.X3pVmLLVKUk |url-status=dead}}</ref>
=== United Kingdom === The colors of the MultiCam pattern were used in the development of the British armed forces Multi-Terrain Pattern (MTP).
British forces deployed in Afghanistan used MTP uniforms from March 2010 onwards, with these uniforms replacing all Disruptive Pattern Material (DPM) uniforms by 2013.
The colors used in Crye's MultiCam technology were determined to be the best performing, across the widest range of environments (by a significant margin) when compared with the two existing DPM designs in use at the time and was subsequently selected as the basis for the new MTP camouflage, combined with the existing DPM base pattern.<ref>{{cite news |last=Emery |first=Daniel |date=20 December 2009 |title=British Army to get new camouflage uniform |url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8422942.stm |access-date=20 December 2009 |agency=BBC News |archive-date=25 March 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200325114332/http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8422942.stm |url-status=live}}</ref><ref name="copping">{{cite news |last=Copping |first=Jasper |date=20 December 2009 |title=British Army to get new uniforms – turned down by the US and made in China |url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/onthefrontline/6844734/British-Army-to-get-new-uniforms---turned-down-by-the-US-and-made-in-China.html |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20091223031314/http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/onthefrontline/6844734/British-Army-to-get-new-uniforms---turned-down-by-the-US-and-made-in-China.html |archive-date=23 December 2009 |access-date=20 December 2009 |work=The Daily Telegraph |location=London}}</ref>

In 2010, U.S. soldiers deployed to Afghanistan were issued MultiCam versions of the Army Combat Uniform, as the existing Universal Camouflage Pattern (UCP) was found to be inadequate for the terrain, under the designation '''Operation Enduring Freedom Camouflage Pattern''' (OEF-CP or OCP).<ref>{{cite web |last=Bacon |first=Lance M. |date=23 August 2010 |title=Soldiers receive new MultiCam ACUs, gear |url=http://www.armytimes.com/news/2010/08/army-shelby-troops-receive-new-multicam-082210w/ |access-date=16 August 2011 |work=Army Times}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |last=Cox |first=Matthew |date=20 February 2010 |title=Army to replace camo pattern in Afghanistan |url=http://www.armytimes.com/news/2010/02/army_multicam_030110w/ |work=Army Times}}</ref>

In May 2014, the Army selected a pattern similar to MultiCam called Scorpion W2 to replace UCP, naming it the Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP).<ref>[http://www.military.com/daily-news/2014/05/23/army-selects-new-camouflage-pattern.html?ESRC=todayinmil.sm Army Selects New Camouflage Pattern] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140524022522/http://www.military.com/daily-news/2014/05/23/army-selects-new-camouflage-pattern.html?ESRC=todayinmil.sm |date=24 May 2014}} – Military.com, 23 May 2014</ref><ref>[http://kitup.military.com/2014/05/army-taps-scorpion-replace-ucp.html Army Taps Scorpion to Replace UCP] – Kitup.Military.com, 23 May 2014</ref> The original Scorpion pattern was jointly developed by Crye Precision and the Army for the Objective Force Warrior program in 2002, and Crye made small adjustments for trademark purposes to create MultiCam. OCP resembles MultiCam with muted greens, light beige, and dark brown colors, but uses fewer beige and brown patches and no vertical twig and branch elements.<ref>[http://www.armytimes.com/article/20140523/NEWS04/305230076/Army-selects-new-camo-pattern Army selects new camo pattern], ''Army Times'', 23 May 2014</ref>
