{{Use dmy dates|date=April 2022}} In Irish folklore, '''Muckie''' is the name given to the reported mysterious creature said to inhabit the Lakes of Killarney in Ireland.
In 2003, scientists conducted a series of sonar scans to determine local fish populations. However, a large solid object in the water was recorded,<ref name="The Irish Times">{{Cite news|url=https://www.irishtimes.com/news/monster-fish-in-killarney-lake-think-scientists-1.369925|title=Monster 'fish' in Killarney lake think scientists|work=The Irish Times|access-date=2017-03-26|language=en-US}}</ref> which has led to the theory that the lake is inhabited by some form of lake monster, similar to the famed "Nessie" of Loch Ness.<ref name="The Irish Times"/>
It has been suggested that witnesses might have seen seals, which when travelling in pairs will dive and rise opposite to each other, giving the impression of being a single larger animal.
The name Muckie comes from a portmanteau of Muckross (one of the three Killarney lakes) and the ''ie'' suffix to mimic the Loch Ness Nessie.<ref name=":0">{{Cite news|url=https://www.lakelubbers.com/lakes-of-killarney-1297/|title=Lakes of Killarney, Ireland Vacation Info - Lakelubbers|work=Lakelubbers|access-date=2017-03-26}}</ref>
Tourism interests have tried to encourage the legend.<ref>{{Cite news|url=https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/nessies-cousin-making-waves-in-tourism-capital-26234497.html|title=Nessie's cousin making waves in tourism capital - Independent.ie|work=Independent.ie|access-date=2017-03-26|language=en}}</ref>
In October 2004, a Japanese TV crew spent a week in the region, looking for Muckie.<ref>[http://archives.tcm.ie/thekingdom/2004/10/21/story15048.asp Japanese TV crew visit] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070929145549/http://archives.tcm.ie/thekingdom/2004/10/21/story15048.asp |date=2007-09-29 }}</ref>
