The '''Democratic Renewal Party''' ({{langx|pt|Partido Renovação Democrática}}, PRD) is a political party in Brazil, established on 26 October 2022 from the merger of two conservative parties: the Brazilian Labour Party (PTB) and Patriota. The merger was motivated by the results of the 2022 general election, since both parties failed to obtain the number of votes to meet the electoral threshold. With the union, the votes of the two parties were summed up and the new organization was considered to have reached the threshold.<ref name="braziliense">{{cite news |last1=Doria |first1=Vinicius |title=PTB e Patriota anunciam fusão e batizam novo partido de 'Mais Brasil' |url=https://www.correiobraziliense.com.br/politica/2022/10/5047185-ptb-e-patriota-anunciam-fusao-e-batizam-novo-partido-de-mais-brasil.html |access-date=3 August 2024 |work=Correio Braziliense |date=26 October 2022 |language=pt}}</ref>
With 1.3 million members in December 2023, it is the third largest party in the country.
==History== As of the 2018 general election, a progressive electoral threshold was established for political parties in Brazil to have access to party subsidies and free electoral advertising on radio and television.<ref>{{cite act |author=National Congress |article= |title=Emenda Constitucional |script-title= |trans-title= |type= |prefix=No. |index=97 |date=4 October 2017 |periodical= |institution= |location= |at= |url=http://www.planalto.gov.br/ccivil_03/constituicao/Emendas/Emc/emc97.htm#art1 |access-date=3 August 2024 |archive-url |archive-date=}}</ref> That year, Patriota did not meet the new criteria to be entitled to these benefits, the reason why it merged with the Progressive Republican Party.<ref>{{cite web |title=Plenário do TSE aprova incorporação do PRP ao Patriota |url=https://www.tse.jus.br/comunicacao/noticias/2019/Marco/tse-aprova-incorporacao-do-prp-ao-patriota |website=Tribunal Superior Eleitoral |access-date=3 August 2024 |language=pt |date=28 March 2019}}</ref>
In 2022, the Brazilian Labour Party and Patriota both failed to reach the threshold; therefore, the parties began negotiations for a merger.<ref name="braziliense" /> On 26 October, the merger was approved in the national conventions of both parties, on the condition that controversial PTB politicians Roberto Jefferson and Eduardo Cunha did not join the new organization.<ref>{{cite web |last1=Rodrigues |first1=Larissa |last2=Moreira |first2=Rudá |title=PTB e Patriota aprovam fusão e criam Mais Brasil; Jefferson não fará parte |url=https://www.cnnbrasil.com.br/politica/ptb-e-patriota-aprovam-fusao-e-criam-mais-brasil-jefferson-nao-fara-parte/ |website=CNN Brasil |access-date=3 August 2024 |language=pt |date=26 October 2022}}</ref> It was decided at the time that it would be called "More Brazil" ({{langx|pt|Mais Brasil}}) and would use the number 25 in elections.
===Name issues=== Originally, "More Brazil" was the name chosen for the registration of the party. However, in 2022, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) rejected the request of the Brazilian Woman's Party to be renamed "Brazil Party" ({{langx|pt|Partido Brasil}}) or "For More Brazil" ({{langx|pt|Por Mais Brasil|links=no}}), on the grounds that these names did not distinguish its ideological orientation and could create confusion among voters with the Brazilian state itself.<ref>{{cite web |title=TSE mantém rejeição à mudança de nome do Partido da Mulher Brasileira (PMB) |url=https://www.tse.jus.br/comunicacao/noticias/2022/Abril/tse-mantem-rejeicao-a-mudanca-de-nome-do-partido-da-mulher-brasileira-pmb |website=Tribunal Superior Eleitoral |access-date=3 August 2024 |language=pt |date=11 August 2022 |archive-date=28 July 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220728113057/https://www.tse.jus.br/comunicacao/noticias/2022/Abril/tse-mantem-rejeicao-a-mudanca-de-nome-do-partido-da-mulher-brasileira-pmb |url-status=live }}</ref> Hence, as a preventive measure against a potential rejection of the name "More Brazil", in 2023 the party adopted the alternative name "Democratic Renewal Party".<ref>{{cite web |title=Nota de esclarecimento {{!}} Fusão Patriota/PTB |url=https://patriotasp.org.br/2023/nota-de-esclarecimento-fusao-patriota-ptb/ |website=Patriota SP |access-date=4 August 2024 |language=pt |date=13 March 2023 |archive-date=23 May 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240523100252/https://patriotasp.org.br/2023/nota-de-esclarecimento-fusao-patriota-ptb/ |url-status=dead }}</ref>
On 9 November 2023, the TSE registered the party, recognizing the second name.<ref>{{cite web |title=TSE aprova criação do Partido Renovação Democrática (PRD) |url=https://www.tse.jus.br/comunicacao/noticias/2023/Novembro/tse-aprova-criacao-do-partido-renovacao-democratica-prd |website=Tribunal Superior Eleitoral |access-date=4 August 2024 |language=pt |date=9 November 2023 |archive-date=25 February 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240225124409/https://www.tse.jus.br/comunicacao/noticias/2023/Novembro/tse-aprova-criacao-do-partido-renovacao-democratica-prd |url-status=live }}</ref>
