Born in Milan, Morandini began working as a film critic in 1952 for the ''La Notte'' newspaper.<ref name=bio>{{cite news|last1=Redazione|title=Addio a Morandini, decano dei critici italiani. Un secolo di passione per il cinema|url=http://www.repubblica.it/spettacoli/cinema/2015/10/17/news/addio_al_critico_cinematografico_morandini-125325201/|accessdate=20 October 2015|work=La Repubblica|date=17 October 2015}}</ref> Between 1965 and 1998 he was the film critic for the newspaper ''Il Giorno''.<ref name=bio/> He is best known for the book collection of film reviews ''Il Morandini'', he published with the collaboration of his wife Laura and his daughter Luisa for seventeen editions, starting from 1999.<ref name=bio/><ref name="il man">{{cite news|last1=Antonello Catacchio|title=La magnifica lezione di un critico fuoriclasse|url=http://ilmanifesto.info/la-magnifica-lezione-di-un-critico-fuoriclasse/|accessdate=20 October 2015|work=Il manifesto|date=20 October 2015}}</ref> He also cured several monographies and wrote a history of cinema together with Goffredo Fofi and Gianni Volpi.<ref name=bio/> In 1964 he played an important role in Bernardo Bertolucci's ''Before the Revolution''.<ref name="il man"/> He also directed the Bellaria Film Festival from 1984 to 1997 and again in 2002.<ref name="il man"/>

Morandini was the subject of three documentary films, ''Non sono che un critico'' by Anna Gorio and Tonino Curagi, ''Je m'appelle Morando – Alfabeto Morandini'' by Daniele Segre e ''Morando's Music'' by Luigi Faccini.<ref name="il man"/> In 1995 he received the Flaiano Prize for his career.<ref name=bio/>
