Members ride 1970s 2 stroke mopeds that go 25-30 MPH, though a lot of people modify theirs to go faster. Due to the mopeds age and speed, they are inexpensive to purchase and maintain with more experienced members teaching newer ones. Members join for solidarity and support and are typically students or recent graduates with men making up roughly two-thirds of all members.<ref name=":1">{{Cite news |last=Hageman |first=William |date=August 1, 2004 |title=Moped Army is fueled with all the might a 2-horsepower engine can muster |pages=13-1, 13-8 |work=The Chicago Tribune |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/231300451/?terms=%22moped%20army%22&match=1 |access-date=January 1, 2024}}</ref><ref name=":2">{{Cite web |date=May 7, 2007 |title=Mopeds / FIx them yourself |url=https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/ |access-date=2024-01-02 |website=Cedar Rapids Gazette |pages=1, 6 |language=en}}</ref> In larger cities such as San Francisco, riders appreciate the ease of parking.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Harmanci |first=Reyhan |date=2005-12-27 |title=Moped diaries / You pedal, you ride, you hit a top speed of 20... |url=https://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/moped-diaries-you-pedal-you-ride-you-hit-a-2555441.php |access-date=2024-01-02 |website=SFGATE |language=en}}</ref>
