He is a twice European champion and a world record holder. He originally claimed the gold medal in Weightlifting at the 1988 Summer Olympics – Men's 56 kg but was disqualified after he tested positive for furosemide. It became a scandal after another Bulgarian weightlifter Angel Guenchev, who also originally claimed a gold medal in weightlifting, was disqualified for failing a drug test and resulting to a positive result for the doping agent furosemide. The Bulgarian weightlifting team was forced to withdraw midway from the weightlifting competition.<ref>{{cite web | url=https://www.nytimes.com/1988/09/24/sports/the-seoul-olympics-weight-lifting-team-lifted-after-2d-drug-test-is-failed.html | title=HE Seoul Olympics: Weight Lifting; Team Lifted After 2d Drug Test Is Failed | work=The New York Times | date=24 September 1998 | accessdate=23 August 2016}}</ref><ref>{{cite web | url=https://www.theguardian.com/sydney/story/0,,372105,00.html | title=Bulgaria's weightlifters expelled from games | work=The Guardian | date=23 September 2000 | accessdate=23 August 2016}}</ref><ref>{{cite web | url=https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1988-09-24-sp-2399-story.html | title=The Seoul Games / Day 8: Bulgaria's Weightlifting Team Withdraws After Drug Suspensions | work=Los Angeles Times | date=24 September 1988 | access-date=23 August 2016}}</ref><ref>{{cite news | url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/sports/1988/09/24/2nd-weightlifter-banned-bulgaria-pulls-team/f54a6aaf-a573-4fca-95c1-e3d05b5b2793/ | title=2nd Weightlifter Banned, Bulgaria Pulls Team | newspaper=Washington Post | date=24 September 1988 | accessdate=23 August 2016}}</ref> == References == {{Reflist}}
