The 2004 pageant marks the second straight year that Sanya played host of the pageant. [[Rosanna Davison]] of [[Republic of Ireland|Ireland]] crowned her successor [[María Julia Mantilla]] of [[Peru]]. 107 contestants from all over the world competed for the crown marking at that time, the biggest turnout in the pageant's 54-year history. That record was held until [[Miss World 2008]] where 109 nations sent representatives.

== Debuts, returns, and, withdrawals == This edition saw the debut of Fiji and the return of Egypt, El Salvador, Ghana, Honduras, Saint Lucia, Taiwan and Turks and Caicos Islands; Turks and Caicos Islands, which last competed in [[Miss World 1988|1988]], El Salvador in [[Miss World 1993|1993]], Saint Lucia in [[Miss World 1994|1994]], Egypt in [[Miss World 1997|1997]], Taiwan and Honduras in [[Miss World 2000|2000]] and Ghana in [[Miss World 2002|2002]].

Andorra, Belize, Guatemala, Lesotho, Northern Mariana Islands, Swaziland and Uruguay, withdrew from the competition.
