Carthen was born in 1960 and graduated from Bloomfield Hills Lahser High School in 1980.<ref name=PFA>{{cite web|title=Milt Carthens|publisher=Pro Football Archives|accessdate=July 2, 2022|url=https://www.profootballarchives.com/playerc/cart06200.html}}</ref>

He enrolled at the University of Michigan and played for Michigan Wolverines football team under Bo Schembechler.
