It is a part of the municipality of Edam-Volendam, and lies about 5&nbsp;km northeast of Purmerend.

== History == The village was first mentioned in 1277 as Homines de Middela, and means "the middle river".<ref>{{cite web|url=https://etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/middelie |title=Middelie - (geografische naam) |website=Etymologiebank |access-date=29 April 2022 |language=nl}}</ref> Middelie developed in the 12th century as a peat excavation settlement.<ref name="monument">{{cite news|url=https://www.dbnl.org/tekst/sten009monu11_01/sten009monu11_01_0110.php |title=Middelie |author=Ronald Stenvert & Saskia van Ginkel-Meester |publisher=Waanders |location=Zwolle |year=2006 |language=nl |access-date=29 April 2022}}</ref> It used to be a fishing village, but after the Purmer was ''polder''ed, it lost its connection to the sea and the village stagnated. During the Reformation, Mennonites settled in the village, and used to make up half the population until the 20th century.<ref name="plaats"/>

The Mennonite church is a modest aisleless church which was built in 1899 as a replacement of a wooden church.<ref name="monument"/> In 2013, ownership was transferred to a foundation and is used for weddings, meetings and concerts.<ref name="plaats"/>
