Dr. David Weisberg suggested<ref name=WeisbergAggadah>Weisberg, David. “The Rare Accents of the Twenty-One Books.” The Jewish Quarterly Review, vol. 56, no.5, ser. 3, 1966, pp. 59-60</ref> that the merkha kefula mark is found on words that refer to an aggadic tale. For instance, he claimed<ref name=WeisbergAggadah/> that the merkha kefula of {{bibleverse||Zechariah|3:2|HE}} is meant to remind the reader of the aggadic legend that the high priest Joshua was literally thrown into a furnace (as recorded in the {{cite Talmud|b|Sanhedrin||93a}}).
