It is a coastal species that originates from the South China and Sulu Seas around the Philippines and Malaysia.<ref name=fishbase>{{FishBase|genus=Melapedalion|species=breve|year=2012|month=August}}</ref> It grows to about {{convert|22.7|cm|in}} SL.<ref name=fishbase/> It is the only member of its monotypic genus<ref name = "FishBase genus">{{FishBase genus|genus=Melapedalion|month=April|year=2019}}</ref> and was originally described as ''Oxyporhamphus brevis'' by Alvin Seale in 1910 with the type locality given as Paawacan, Palawan Island, Philippines.<ref name = CofF>{{Cof record|spid=14114|title=''Oxyporhamphus brevis''|access-date=22 August 2019}}</ref>
