== History ==

Medianet began as part of the Australian national news agency Australian Associated Press (AAP), which was founded in 1935 by Keith Murdoch as a cooperative newswire serving Australian media outlets.{{Citation needed|date=January 2026}}

In the 1980s, AAP launched a press-release distribution service under the name ''MediaNet'', designed to allow public relations professionals to distribute media releases and information to journalists.{{Citation needed|date=January 2026}}

In 1999, MediaNet was rebranded as ''NewsCentre'' to reflect its role as a tool for press-release distribution and communications. In 2011, the service was renamed Medianet, reflecting an expanded suite of offerings that included media release distribution, a media contacts database, and newsroom tools.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Writers |first=Staff |date=2020-03-03 |title="A Great Loss": AAP To Shut After 85 Years As Medianet & Mediaverse Offered For Sale |url=https://www.bandt.com.au/aap-to-shut-after-85-years/ |access-date=2026-02-10 |website=B&T |language=en-US}}</ref>

In 2020, the traditional AAP newswire announced its closure after 85 years of operation. The newswire business was sold to a not-for-profit consortium, while AAP's media services divisions, including Medianet, Mediaverse, Pagemasters, and directory services, were retained by the agency’s former shareholders and brought together under a new company called Mediality, led by Bruce Davidson.<ref>{{cite web |title=What's left of AAP will be called Mediality |url=https://www.adnews.com.au/news/what-s-left-of-aap-will-be-called-mediality |website=AdNews |access-date=27 January 2026}}</ref>

In March 2026, the Medianet is launched their annual media landscape report at Mumbrella CommsCon event<ref>{{Cite web |last=McGinn |first=Cat |date=2025-12-09 |title=Relevance under pressure: culture, credibility and the new rules of PR revealed at CommsCon 2026 |url=https://mumbrella.com.au/relevance-under-pressure-culture-credibility-and-the-new-rules-of-pr-revealed-at-commscon-2026-909914 |access-date=2026-03-25 |website=Mumbrella |language=en-US}}</ref> <ref>{{Cite web |last=Dickinson |first=Eleanor |date=2026-03-25 |title=‘PR slop’: AI press releases losing trust with journalists |url=https://mumbrella.com.au/pr-slop-ai-press-releases-losing-trust-with-journalists-918557 |access-date=2026-03-25 |website=Mumbrella |language=en-US}}</ref>that showing a massive shift in the media industry, as journalists rapidly adopt Generative AI while simultaneously grappling with its impact on job security and professional integrity<ref>{{Cite web |title=News Releases |url=https://www.myaustraliannews.com.au/news-releases.html |access-date=2026-03-25 |website=Today's News |language=en}}</ref>. thumb|Amrita present on Corporate Affairs summit 2026 stage thumb|''Amrita Sidhu presents at CommsCon (Mumbrella)''
