He was born on 25 November 1923 and educated at The Judd School and Worcester College, Oxford.<ref>“Who was Who” 1897-2007 London, A & C Black, 2007 {{ISBN|978-0-19-954087-7}}</ref> After World War II service with the RAFVR he was ordained in 1953 and began his career with curacies in Cuckfield and Brighton. He was Vicar of Hangleton from 1957 to 1962 <ref>''Crockford's Clerical Directory 1975-76'' London: Oxford University Press, 1976 {{ISBN|0-19-200008-X}}</ref> and then of Glynde until 1982.
