The '''Max Born Medal and Prize''' is a scientific prize awarded yearly by the German Physical Society (DPG) and the British Institute of Physics (IOP) in memory of the German physicist Max Born,<ref>{{Cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=WG8-z6arzyAC&pg=PA97 |title=In the Wings of Physics |first=Maurice|last=Jacob |date=January 25, 1995 |publisher=World Scientific|via=Google Books|page=97|isbn=978-981-02-2178-2 }}</ref> who was a German-Jewish physicist, instrumental in the development of quantum mechanics. It was established in 1972<ref>{{cite web |title=International Bilateral Medals and Prizes |url=https://www.iop.org/about/awards/international-bilateral-awards |website=Institute of Physics |access-date=13 May 2026 }}</ref> and first awarded in 1973.<ref>{{cite web |title=Max Born Medal and Prize recipients |url=https://www.iop.org/about/awards/international-bilateral-awards/max-born-medal-and-prize-recipients |website=Institute of Physics |access-date=13 May 2026 }}</ref>

The terms of the award are that it is "to be presented for outstanding contributions to physics". The award goes to physicists based in Germany and in the UK or Ireland in alternate years.<ref name="iop medal">{{cite web |url=http://www.iop.org/about/awards/bilateral/born/page_38469.html |title=The Born medal and prize |publisher=Institute of Physics |access-date=25 January 2020 |archive-date=8 March 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200308002210/http://www.iop.org/about/awards/bilateral/born/page_38469.html |url-status=dead }}</ref><ref name="dpg medal">{{cite web |title=Max-Born-Preis und -Medaille |trans-title=Max Born Prize and Medal |publisher=German Physical Society |url=https://www.dpg-physik.de/auszeichnungen/dpg-preise-mit-anderen-organisationen/max-born-preis-und-medaille/max-born?set_language=en |access-date=25 January 2020}}</ref> The prize is accompanied by a silver medal "about 6 cm in diameter and 0.5 cm thick. One face carries a profile of Max Born and his name and dates. The other face carries the equation pq – qp = h/2πi and the full names of IOP and DPG.
