There are twelve to 22 blunt ribs present. The straight to slightly curved brownish-black spines turn gray with age. The one to five central spines are {{cvt|2 to 4|cm}}, the seven to 14 radial spines {{cvt|1 to 3|cm}} long.
The crooked, crimson flowers are {{cvt|7 to 9|cm}} long and have a diameter of {{cvt|4.5 to 5|cm}}.
